Laker men finish fourth, Laker women place 12th at Jaguar Invitational
Berkhedle finishes third overall for Clayton State men

AUGUSTA, Ga. – September 22, 2007 – Running in it second meet of the 2007 cross country season, the Clayton State Laker men’s cross country team turned in another strong performance on Saturday, placing a strong fourth at the Jaguar Invitational. The news wasn’t quite so good for the Clayton State women, as the Lakers place 12th in the 15-team field.

The Laker men finished with 98 points, finishing behind Benedict (64), Nova Southeastern (54) and Columbus State (52).

Freshman Walid Berkhedle had his breakthrough meet for the Lakers, finishing third overall out of 63 runners total with a time of 35:36.75 minutes in the 10-K event. He finished two seconds behind O’Neil Williams from Benedict and a minute off the pace of individual champion Emmanuel Kirwa from Benedict.

Berkhedle finished 10 seconds ahead of Columbus State’s Tim English, giving him the best finish of all Peach Belt Conference runners competing in the meet.

"Walid has established himself as the Peach Belt’s male frontrunner for the time being with another fantastic finish," said Clayton State head coach Mike Mead. "He showed patience and it paid off in the end."

In addition to Berkhedle, the Lakers had two more runners place in the Top 25. Anthony Aguilar finished a strong 11th with a time of 36:41.60, while Joey Chino finished 21st in 37:20.35. Rounding out the Clayton State scoring was Au Nguyen finished 32nd in 38:42.22, Jarrid Casimir finished 38th in 39:53.48 and Jeremy Adkins placed 55th in 45:50.12.

The Clayton State women finished its meet with 316 points.

Freshman Chelsea Ellis had the best performance for the Clayton State women, placing 26th with a time of 27:43.31 in the 6K event. Terrica Hamilton placed 53rd with a time of 29:33.04, followed by Kara Stokes in 80th in 32:03.69, Isabelle Ahanotu in 93rd in 34:55.54 and Titisha Cochran placed 96th with a time of 35:53.43.

Clayton State’s next meet is the Georgia Collegiates in Macon next Saturday (Sept. 29).
