Clayton State’ White, Semyrodenko fall in doubles quarterfinals of ITA Southeast Women’s Tennis Regionals
Lakers’ Cercelletti, Krommelova advance to Singles "A" Consolation finals

SUMPTER, S.C. – September 18-21, 2009 – The Clayton State Laker women’s tennis team opened the 2009-10 season over the weekend at the ITA Southeast Regionals at the Palmetto Tennis Center, and all eyes were on "A" flight doubles matches where the Laker duo of Katie White and Viktoriya Semyrodenko aimed to repeat as region championships.

The Clayton State team, seeded eighth in the regional, advanced to the quarterfinals in the Doubles "A" bracket with victories over Queens’ Christina Engelberth and Erin Williams (8-2), and Eve Aubry and Jimena Munoz Quiroga from Limestone (8-2). However, in the quarterfinals, White and Semyrodenko dropped a tough 9-8 decision to second-seeded Gabriella Kovacs and Sona Novakova from Armstrong Atlantic.

Despite the doubles setback, it was overall a strong regional for Clayton State.

White, seeded fifth, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singles "A" flight. She defeated Lander’s Caitlin Fell 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 64, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the Round of 32 over Coker’s Rachel Lamar. White then defeated Lees-McRae’s Christine Vanard 6-4, 7-6 in the Round of 16, but dropped a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision against Sabina Baberadova in the quarterfinals.

In the Singles "A" flight consolation, Clayton State’s Marie Cercelletti and Ivanna Krommelova both advanced to the finals, where they were declared co-consolation champions.

Cercelletti knocked off UNC Pembroke’s Anna Larson 6-3, 6-3 in the third round, Georgia College’s Mara Rojas 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Pfeiffer’s Alona Krutkina by default in the semifinals. Krommelova defeated USC Aiken’s Sole Angel 6-1, 6-0 in the third round, followed by a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Flagler’s Rachel Gould in the quarterfinals and a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Eliza Adusumilli in the semifinals.
