Ninth-ranked Clayton State opens 2008 women’s tennis season with 8-1 victory at Emory
Lakers prevail in five of six in singles and sweep doubles

ATLANTA – February 9, 2008 – The 2008 women’s tennis season got off to a fine start on Saturday for the Clayton State Lakers as they rolled to an impressive 8-1 victory at Division III power Emory.

The Lakers, ranked ninth in the preseason Division II National Poll, won five of their six matches in singles and swept the three doubles matches.

Anna Redecsi knocked off Emory’s Sabra Rogers 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Clayton State’s Julia Chergova followed at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over the Lady Eagles’ Lorne McManigle. Freshman Katherine White was impressive at No. 3 for the Lakers with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Emory’s Leah Seyburn, and Kristina Jonutyte prevailed at No. 4 over Emory’s Tshema Nash.

Veronika Jasenovcova rounded it out for Clayton State at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kristen Hillock from Emory.

In doubles, the team of Redesci and Chergova knocked off Rogers and McManigle from Emory, 8-1, as did White and Selma Hidass at No. 2 with a 8-1 victory over the Emory team of Nash and Seyburn. Jonutyte and Elena Bondari won at No. 3 doubles for Clayton State with an 8-6 victory over Emil Wein and Sara Vrabec from Emory.

Clayton State travels next to Fort Valley State on Friday at 2 p.m.
