Clayton State wins home opener in women’s tennis 6-3 over Columbus State
Ninth-ranked Lakers improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Peach Belt Conference with nationally-ranked victory

JONESBORO, Ga. – February 23, 2008 – The Clayton State Laker women’s tennis team played its home opener on Saturday, and the Lakers recorded a huge Division II Top 25 6-3 victory over visiting Columbus State at Independence Park. Clayton State entered the match ranked ninth in Division II, while Columbus State was ranked 13th.

The victory improves the Lakers to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt Conference.

The highlight of the match was two matches featuring four players ranked in the Division II Top 50, and two doubles teams ranked in the Division II Top 25. At No. 1 singles, Columbus State’s Agata Polyn, ranked 30
th in the nation, pulled off a 6-4, 6-4 stunner over Clayton State’s Anna Redecsi, ranked 15, while Clayton State’s Julia Chergova, ranked 47th, knocked off 50th-ranked Roxanna Dondera from Columbus 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, the fourth-ranked Clayton State team of Redecsi and Chergova knocked off the 19
th
-ranked Columbus State team of Polyn and Groenewald 8-3.

Clayton State also got victories from Viktoriya Semyrodenk at No. 3 singles, Katie White at No. 4 singles and Kristina Jonutyte at No. 5. In doubles, the Lakers also got a victory at No. 2 from White and Selma Hidass.

Clayton State plays host to Clark Atlanta on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Independence Park.
