Eighth-ranked
Clayton State rolls to 8-1 victory at in-state NAIA power Berry
Lakers sweep singles matches to improve to 16-2 overall
 ROME,
Ga. – April 7,
2008 –
Two eighth-ranked women’s tennis teams in the nation squared off
against each other on Monday, and it was Clayton State that came out
on top in the in-state showdown.
Clayton State, ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, rolled to an
impressive 8-1 victory at rival Berry, which is ranked eighth in the
nation at the NAIA level. The victory gets Clayton State back on the
winning track after Wednesday’s tough defeat against Georgia State,
and the Lakers improve to 16-2 overall.
One more victory by Clayton State will tie the Lakers with their
most victories in a season.
Clayton State broke open a close match by sweeping all six singles
matches, and all were straight set victories. The headlining match
was at No. 1, where the Lakers’ Anna Redecsi, ranked 15th
in the nation in Division II, won a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Berry’s
Emma Cruz, who is ranked eighth in the NAIA.
Julia Chergova (No. 2), Viktoriya Semyrodenko (No. 3), Katie White
(No. 4), Kristina Jonutyte (No. 5) and Veronika Jasenovcova (No. 6)
also won in singles for Clayton State.
The Lakers won two of the three matches in doubles. Chergova and
Redecsi prevailed at No. 1, and White and Selma Hidass won at No. 2.
