Second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic knocks
off
eighth-ranked Clayton State 9-0
Lakers suffer
first defeat of the season to stand 9-1 overall and 5-1 in Peach
Belt Conference
 JONESBORO,
Ga. – March 11, 2008 –
The top teams in the Peach Belt Conference in women’s tennis, not
to mention two of the Top 10 teams in Division II squared off on
Tuesday, and it was second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic that came out
on top with a 9-0 victory over eighth-ranked Clayton State.
It was the first defeat this season for Clayton State, now 9-1
overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. Armstrong Atlantic
remains undefeated on the season at 12-0 and 8-0 in the Peach Belt.
The most exciting matches were in doubles, where all three matches
came down to the wire. The No. 1 showdown saw Clayton State’s 15th-ranked
team of Anna Redecsi and Julia Chergova fight back from a 5-0
deficit to tie it against Armstrong Atlantic’s Iulia Stupak and
Gabriella Kovacs. However, the Lady Pirate duo prevailed 8-6.
In the other two doubles matches. Armstrong Atlantic’s Martina
Beckmann and Alida Mueller-Wehlau downed Clayton State’s Katie White
and Selma Hidass 8-5 at No. 2, while the Lady Pirates’ Alisa
Kagukina and Johanna Dahlback knocked off the Lakers’ Viktoriya
Semyodenk 8-5.
There were three Division II Top 50 showdowns in singles. Stupak
downed Redecsi at No. 1 6-2, 6-2, while Dahlback knocked off
Semyrodenk 6-1, 6-2. Perhaps the most thrilling match was at No. 3,
where Armstrong Atlantic’s Mueller-Wehlau outlasted Chergova 6-1,
7-6 (7-4).
Clayton State returns to action on Saturday at 12 p.m., playing host
to 16th-ranked
Florida Southern.
