16th-ranked Clayton State drops tough
6-3 decision at fourth-ranked Valdosta State
Lakers win twice
in doubles, once in singles to stand 9-8 overall
VALDOSTA,
Ga. — APRIL 7, 2007 — Fresh off cracking the Division II Top
25 poll
for women’s tennis, the Clayton State Lakers dropped a tough 6-3
decision at fourth-ranked Valdosta State on Saturday at the VSU
Tennis Complex.
The defeat drops the Lakers to 9-8 overall on the season.
Clayton State took an early 2-1 lead in the match by winning two of
the three matches in doubles. However, Valdosta State took control
by winning five of the six matches in singles.
In doubles, Clayton State’s Anna Redecsi and Julia Chergova
prevailed 8-3 over the Valdosta State team of Dominique Rothlaender
and Anne Corten at No. 1. The Lakers also were victorious at No. 3
with Zsuzsa Marosfalvi and Anna Marton posting a thrilling 8-7
decision over Valdosta State’s Natali Gumbrecht and Sonya Haggstrom.
Redecsi knocked off the Blazers’ Raphaelle Durante 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1
singles. However, Valdosta State won the remaining five matches for
the victory.
Clayton State will battle Division I neighbor Georgia State at
Piedmont Park on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
