Clayton State knocks off top-ranked Emory 6-3
Lakers take five of six in singles to improve to 3-1 overall

MORROW, Ga. --- FEBRUARY 28, 2007 --- The Clayton State Laker women’s team got back on the winning track on Wednesday in a match of national proportions. The Lakers pulled off a 6-3 victory over Emory, the top-ranked team in Division III and four-time defending NCAA Division III national champions.

Clayton State won five of the six matches in singles, but there was no shortage of drama in any of them. Three matches went three sets, and two had tiebreakers. Anna Redesci won a tough three-set decision at No. 1, defeating Emory’s Richelle Marasigan 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, while Elena Bondari rallied from a game down at No. 3 to knock off Emory’s Kirsten Hillock 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.

In addition, Anna Marton outlasted Emory’s Jenny Moscato 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 11-9 at No. 6. Only Julia Chergova at No. 2 had a two-set victory for Clayton State as she downed Emory’s Tshema Nash 6-4, 6-2.

The Lakers won only one double match, but it was at No. 1 where Redecsi and Chergova, the nation’s No. 2-ranked team in Division II, downed Marasigan and Rogers from Emory 8-5.

Clayton State returns to Peach Belt Conference play with a 2 p.m. match at Georgia College on Friday.
