Chergova, Redecsi gear up for ITA Nationals with
Chick Fil A Championship
Duo also win respected singles flight for Clayton State

AUGUSTA, Ga. --- OCTOBER 6-8, 2006 --- In a tune-up for the upcoming ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Division II National Championships, the Clayton State Laker women’s tennis team turned in a stellar performance over the weekend at the Chick Fil A Collegiate Championship at Augusta State.

The doubles team of Julia Chergova and Ann Redecsi won the Women’s Doubles Flight 1 championship, while Redecsi won the Women’s Singles Flight 1 championship and Chergova was victorious at Women’s Singles Flight 2. In addition, Veronika Jasenovcova finished runner-up in the Women’s Singles Flight 5, while Elena Bondari won the Women’s Singles Flight 6 championship and Bondari and Jasenovcova finished runner-up in the Women’s Doubles Flight 2.

The team of Chergova and Redecsi prepared for the ITA Nationals with an impressive performance. The duo opened with an 8-3 victory over Queens’ Lindsay King and Merissa Mock in the quarterfinals, followed by an 8-3 victory over Gabby Acuna and Sara Skagegard from Georgia College in the semifinals. In the championship, Chergova and Redecsi rolled to an 8-1 victory over Augusta State’s Laura Ferreira and Nathalia Rodrigues.

In the Women’s Singles Flight 1, Redecsi opened with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Newberry’s Autise Mortimer in the quarterfinals, followed by a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Rodrigues from Augusta State in the semifinals. In the championship, Redecsi knocked off Skagegard from Georgia College 7-5, 6-4.

Chergova earned a bye to the quarterfinals in the Women’s Singles Flight 2 division, where she posted a victory over Queens’ Skye Powell. Chergova followed with a victory over Newberry’s Lauren Hartley in the semifinals and Augusta State’s Fernanda Chiaparini in the championship.

Bondari gained a bye to the semifinals in the Women’s Singles Flight 6, and defeated Newberry’s Natalie Hudson 6-2, 6-0. In the championship, Bondari recorded another 6-2, 6-0 victory, this time over Kristen McCulley from Queens.

Chergova and Redecsi will compete in the ITA Division II Nationals this weekend in Fort Myers, FL.
