Clayton State women, UNC Pembroke battle to
2-2 overtime deadlock
Sayon scores twice as Lakers now stand 2-6-1 and 1-2-1 in PBC

MORROW,
Ga. – October 3, 2009 – Fresh off a
thrilling come-from-behind victory over North Georgia on Wednesday,
the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer aimed to make it two straight
on Saturday against visiting UNC Pembroke at Laker Field.
However, a
second-half goal by the Lady Braves and some missed golden
opportunities down the stretch ended the game the game in a 2-2
overtime deadlock for Clayton State. The tie puts Clayton State at
2-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
Trailing 1-0 in
the first half, the Lakers went to their bread-and-butter player –
freshman Cherie Sayon – and she responded. The forward standout
scored both Clayton State goals in the span of 50 seconds.
Sayon scored
the first goal in the 34th
minute off a cross pass from Rebekah Cook. 50 seconds later, Cook
hooked up with Sayon again, this time on a breakaway pass down the
middle for the goal and a 2-1 Laker lead.
But UNC
Pembroke (6-3-1, 1-2-1 PBC) finally broke through in the 69th
minute as Fanny Forsman scored on a header off a corner kick by
Andrea Collen. Down the stretch, the Lakers had three golden
opportunities to possibly win. But Lady Brave goalkeeper Rea
Segoviano made some tremendous saves off shots by Sayon.
Clayton State
goalkeeper Dominique Trappio was superb herself, recording nine
saves. Segoviano recorded four for UNC Pembroke. Britney Joiner
scored the first UNC Pembroke goal in the 27th
minute, and the Lady Braves out-shot Clayton State 24-16.
Clayton State
plays host to PBC newcomer Montevallo on Wednesday night at 5 p.m.
at Laker Field.
