3-2 overtime thriller over Montevallo

2-2-1 in Peach Belt Conference

MORROW,
Ga. – October 8, 2009 – The Clayton State
Laker women’s soccer team appears to have found its groove at the
right time of the 2009 season.
The Lakers ran their unbeaten streak to three straight games on
Thursday as Cherie Sayon’s game-winning goal gave Clayton State a
thrilling 3-2 overtime thriller over visiting Montevallo in Peach
Belt Conference action at Laker Field. The victory improves Clayton
State to 3-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the PBC.
Sayon, the Peach Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, was
held in check most of the contest by a stingy Montevallo defense.
However, Clayton State claimed possession in the second overtime and
set the stage for the freshman forward’s heroics.
Caitlin Clark delivered a direct kick to Jennifer Dreasler on the
left flank. Dreasler then drilled a pass to a streaking Sayon for
the game-winner in from the net in the 105th
minute. The goal was Sayon’s 13th
of the season.
The Lakers twice trailed by a goal in the game. However, Dreasler
tied the game in the 46th
minute off a cross by Maggie Mueller. Then after the Falcons
reclaimed the lead on an Angela Buonassisi goal in the 60th
minute, Clayton State tied the game again, this time on a penalty
kick by Clark in the 82nd
minute.
The combination of Dominique Trappio and Danelle Douglas recorded
nine saves for Clayton State, while Alyssa Maxwell had five saves
for Montevallo (3-6-1, 0-3-1 PBC).
Clayton State plays host to Georgia College on Saturday at 4 p.m. at
Laker Field.
