Georgia College defense stymies Clayton State
women in 3-0 defeat
Three-game unbeaten streak ends for Lakers

MORROW,
Ga. – October 11, 2009 – The Clayton
State Laker women’s soccer team aimed to boost its unbeaten streak
to four straight games on Sunday. However, the Lakers ran into a
buzz saw in the in the form of the visiting Georgia College Bobcats.
Paced by its stout defense, Georgia College slowed down Clayton
State’s recent momentum with a 3-0 shutout at Laker Field. The
defeat drops Clayton State to 3-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Peach
Belt Conference.
The Bobcats’ plan was to slow down Clayton State freshman forward
Cherie Sayon, the second-leading scorer in the PBC coming into the
game. Playing four defenders in the back, it worked almost like
clockwork as Sayon was limited to four shots for the game, and the
Lakers were held to seven as a team.
The Bobcats, meanwhile, took a 1-0 lead in the 21st
minute as Jamie Nevin scored on a cross in front of the goal. The
scored stayed 1-0 through halftime before Georgia College struck
again in the 55th
minute. Lyric Burnett took a long cross-field pass from Ally Treat
and out-raced Laker defender Janei Ivey down the right wing and
scored on a 20-yard shot from the right side of the penalty box.
Georgia College put the final touches on the game in the 85th
minute as Megan McAlpin scored off a deflection by Laker goalkeeper
Dominique Trappio.
Trappio recorded four saves for Clayton State, while Georgia College
goalkeeper Mary Rob Plunkett recorded two saves.
It doesn’t get easier for the Lakers as Clayton State plays host to
third-ranked Columbus State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Laker Field.
