Clayton State senior forward led conference with 20 goals scored

MORROW, Ga. - November 1, 2007 – Olaitan Yusuf’s illustrious Clayton State women’s soccer ended on a sour note on Tuesday in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. However, that ending got a little more sweeter on Thursday.

Yusuf, a senior forward from Ilorin, Nigeria, was selected as the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year on Thursday in conjunction with the All-Peach Belt Conference that was released for women’s soccer. Yusuf is the only Laker selected this season to the All-Peach Belt Conference team.

Yusuf becomes only the second player ever in Peach Belt Conference history to be selected Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year more than once. She also earned the honor in 2005, in addition to being selected 2004 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year. Also, Yusuf is a two-time Division II All-American selection.

Overall, Clayton State has taken the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year honor in three of the last four seasons. In addition to Yusuf’s two awards, former teammate and current Clayton State assistant coach Nkiru Okosieme was the 2004 Peach Belt Player of the Year.

Yusuf leaves Clayton State as the all-time leading scorer at both Clayton State and in the Peach Belt Conference with 83 goals and 185 points. This season, she led the conference in scoring with 20 goals scored and had seven game-winning goals in the process. Yusuf is ranked third in the nation in goals scored and fifth in points scored.
