Clayton State women come
up short in 2-1 defeat at West Georgia
Yusuf scores lone Laker
goal as Clayton State falls to 4-3-1 overall
CARROLLTON,
Ga. – September 25, 2007 – Playing its first non-conference game
in
more than a week, the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team could not
convert some key opportunities on Tuesday as the Lakers dropped a tough
2-1 decision at in-state rival West Georgia. The defeat drops Clayton
State to 4-3-1 overall on the season.
The Lakers were playing from behind from nearly the beginning of the
game. West Georgia scored the lone goal of the first half as Melanie
Kilburn nailed a header off a cross pass from Lauren Bagwell in the
eighth minute.
The Wolves extended the lead to 2-0 in the second half at the 59 th
minute. Mandy Nolan stole a Laker pass inside midfield and launched a
40-yard shot for the goal over the outstretched reach of Clayton State
goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt.
However, Clayton State fought back into the game. Senior forward Olaitan
Yusuf took the ball half the field off a turnover and out-maneuvered
West Georgia goalkeeper Patricia Logsdon for the goal in the 62nd
minute.
The Lakers had numerous opportunities to tie the game down the stretch,
but Logsdon was superb. She recorded 10 saves for the contest, many in
the final stretch to preserve the victory for West Georgia.
For the game, Clayton State out-shot West Georgia 19-12, including 13-4
in the second half. Schmidt recorded four saves for the Lakers.
Clayton State returns to Peach Belt Conference action Saturday, playing
host to UNC-Pembroke at 4:30 p.m. at Laker Field.
