Back on track! Clayton
State women blank USC-Aiken 2-0
Yusuf, Sunbul both score as
Lakers win first Peach Belt Conference game of the season
AIKEN,
S.C. – September 22, 2007 – The Clayton State Laker women’s
soccer
team got back on the winning track on Saturday, recording a 2-0 shutout
over USC-Aiken at the Pacer Pit. The victory was the first for the
Lakers this season in the Peach Belt Conference as Clayton State
improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt.
Clayton State entered the game on a two-game losing skid and the Lakers
hadn’t scored during that period. And in the first half on Saturday,
Clayton State appeared to be sluggish and out of sync.
However, returning from a red card suspension, Olaitan Yusuf again
provided the needed spark for Clayton State in the second half.
The senior forward and two-time Division II All-American broke through
for the Lakers with a goal in the 55 th
minute off a deflection by Lady Pacer goalkeeper Nicole Westphal. It was
Yusuf’s seventh goal of the season.
Seven minutes later, senior forward Yasemin Sunbul took a cross pass
from Caroline Falk and scored from the top of the penalty box. It marked
the first time this season that someone other than Yusuf has scored for
Clayton State.
The combination of Whitney Jowers and Lindsay Schmidt combined for
Clayton State’s third shutout of the season with two saves. Westphal
recorded nine saves for USC-Aiken (2-7, 0-2).
Clayton State plays at in-state rival West Georgia on Tuesday afternoon
at 5 p.m.
