21st-ranked Laker women edge Lenoir-Rhyne in 1-0 thriller
Jowers records first Clayton State shutout with four saves as Lakers improve to 2-0-1

HICKORY, N.C. – September 5, 2007 – Last season, the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team recorded only two victories against teams from the South Atlantic Conference. This year, they’ve already equaled that in only three games.

Ranked 21st in this week’s Division II Top 25 poll, the Lakers remained undefeated on the season with a thrilling 1-0 victory at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday. The victory improves Clayton State to 2-0-1 for the season – all against teams from the South Atlantic Conference.

The only goal came in the 34th minute for Clayton State, and like the four previous goals on the season, it came from Olaitan Yusuf. The senior forward took a pass down the left side from midfielder Yasemin Sunbul, split two defenders at the top of the penalty box and out-maneuvered Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Nicole Ley for the score.

Both teams had ample opportunities in the second half. In fact, Yusuf had three golden chances at point-blank range, but could not convert.

Clayton State goalkeeper Whitney Jowers was flawless in recording her first shutout in a Laker uniform. She recorded four saves for the game, and made some key plays down the stretch in the second half to keep a determined Bears team at bay.

Ley recorded two saves for Lenoir-Rhyne (2-2). The Bears out-shot Clayton State 12-8.

Clayton State remains on the road next Wednesday (Sept. 12) with a 7 p.m. game at Montevallo.
