Laker women close regular
season with 2-0 defeat at Lander
Missed opportunities haunt
Clayton State as Lakers drop to 9-5-1 and 4-4 in Peach Belt
GREENWOOD,
S.C. —October 20, 2007 — The 2007 regular season ended on a
sour note for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team as it dropped
a tough 2-0 decision at Lander on Saturday in Peach Belt Conference
action.
The defeat was the second straight for Clayton State, which concluded
the regular season at 9-5-1 overall and an even 4-4 in the Peach Belt.
The Lakers had numerous opportunities in the game, and actually out-shot
Lander 19-12. In the first half, Clayton State had two shots hit the
post, and then had two shots hit the post and the crossbar in the second
half.
It looked as if the first half would go scoreless, but Lander broke
through with goal in the 40 th
minute.
After a Clayton State foul between midfield and the penalty box, the
Lady Bearcats’ Jannica Finnberg delivered a high shot into the penalty
box. Laker goalkeeper Whitney Jowers couldn’t handle the ball, and
Lander’s Jessica Skowron capitalized with the goal.
Lander got some needed insurance when Aisha Reid crossed a shot into the
opposite corner of the goal in the 46th
minute.
Jowers recorded four saves for Clayton State, while Rachael Hine
recorded six saves for Lander (11-3, 6-1).
Clayton State will play next in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament,
which begins on Oct. 30.
