Laker women close regular season with 2-0 defeat at Lander
Missed opportunities haunt Clayton State as Lakers drop to 9-5-1 and 4-4 in Peach Belt

GREENWOOD, S.C. —October 20, 2007 — The 2007 regular season ended on a sour note for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team as it dropped a tough 2-0 decision at Lander on Saturday in Peach Belt Conference action.

The defeat was the second straight for Clayton State, which concluded the regular season at 9-5-1 overall and an even 4-4 in the Peach Belt.

The Lakers had numerous opportunities in the game, and actually out-shot Lander 19-12. In the first half, Clayton State had two shots hit the post, and then had two shots hit the post and the crossbar in the second half.

It looked as if the first half would go scoreless, but Lander broke through with goal in the 40
th minute.

After a Clayton State foul between midfield and the penalty box, the Lady Bearcats’ Jannica Finnberg delivered a high shot into the penalty box. Laker goalkeeper Whitney Jowers couldn’t handle the ball, and Lander’s Jessica Skowron capitalized with the goal.

Lander got some needed insurance when Aisha Reid crossed a shot into the opposite corner of the goal in the 46
th minute.

Jowers recorded four saves for Clayton State, while Rachael Hine recorded six saves for Lander (11-3, 6-1).

Clayton State will play next in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, which begins on Oct. 30.
