Four straight! Clayton
State wins 3-0 shutout at
Georgia Southwestern
Yusuf scores twice as
Lakers improve to 8-3-1 and 4-2 in Peach Belt
AMERICUS,
Ga. – October 13, 2007 – The Clayton State Laker women’s soccer
team appears to be picking up the pace at the right moment in the 2007
season.
On Saturday, the visiting Lakers made it four straight victories with a
3-0 shutout over Georgia Southwestern at Hurricane field. The victory
improves Clayton State to 8-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the Peach Belt
Conference. In the Lakers’ eight victories, Clayton State has allowed a
mere two goals with six shutouts.
The Lakers took control with two goals in the first half for a 2-0 lead
at halftime.
Senior forward Olaitan Yusuf stole the ball at midfield and went in
untested for an unassisted goal in the 29 th
minute. Nine minutes later, senior Yasemin Sunbul hit junior Teresa
Smith-Dack with a cross pass into the middle of the penalty box, and
Smith-Dack hammered in the goal – her second on the season.
Clayton State increased its lead in the second half thanks to some nifty
passing on offense. Sunbul hit Smith-Dack at the top of the penalty box,
who in turn, passed to the Yusuf on the left side of the box. Yusuf then
scored her second goal of the game on a 15-yard strike in the 56th
minute.
Yusuf’s two goals give her 15 on the season. Her Clayton State and Peach
Belt career records for goals and points now stand at 78 and 175,
respectively.
Clayton State dominated the game, out-shooting Georgia Southwestern
29-6. Making her first start in a Laker uniform, goalkeeper Kristin Cook
recorded the shutout with two saves. Christy Drabek recorded 10 saves
for Georgia Southwestern (0-14, 0-5).
Clayton State plays host to North Greenville on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
