Clayton State women suffer first defeat of season 5-0 at Armstrong Atlantic
16th-ranked Pirates score four second-half goals in Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams

SAVANNAH, Ga. – September 15, 2007 – Playing its Peach Belt Conference opener on Saturday, the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season, dropping a 5-0 decision at 16th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic.

The defeat drops the Lakers to 3-1-1 overall, while Armstrong Atlantic improves to 4-1.

The Lakers suffered a huge setback in the game’s 29th minute when senior forward and leading scorer Olaitan Yusuf was ejected with a red card. Armstrong Atlantic, meanwhile, took advantage of Clayton State being a player down with four second half goals.

Lyndsi Stricklen tallied her first goal of the season in the 55th minute after a misplay by the Clayton State back line left the ball on her foot at the top of the box. Freshman Kyndal Shaaf scored her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute, also after a misplay by the Laker defense.

Kristin Burton tallied her second goal of the game off of a cross from Holly Grulich in the 80th minute, followed by freshman Lianne Stricklen notching her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute from a pass by Elizabeth Kerkhoff from the top of the box.

The Pirates scored once in the first half when Burton headed home a goal off a cross from Ashley Elam in the seventh minute for a quick 1-0 lead.

Armstrong Atlantic outshot the Lakers, 25-8, in the contest as Clayton State goalkeeper Whitney Jowers made five saves in the net. Pirate goalkeepers Tarra Kohler and Tracey Mitchell combined on the shutout, with Mitchell making the only save of the match.

Clayton State plays its home opener on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against defending Peach Belt champion Columbus State at Laker Field.
