Two straight! Clayton State women edge UNC-Pembroke 1-0
Pender scores lone goal as Lakers improve to 4-2 in Peach Belt and 5-7 overall

PEMBROKE, N.C. --- OCTOBER 7, 2006 --- In the last couple of weeks, the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team has found new life in the 2006 season, and that new life continued on Saturday at Peach Belt Conference rival UNC-Pembroke.

Tara Pender’s first half goal was all the Lakers needed as Clayton State edged UNC-Pembroke 1-0 at the Belk Athletic Center. After starting the season 1-6, Clayton State has now won four of its last five games to improve to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in the Peach Belt.

Pender scored her goal in the game’s 33rd minute as she hammered home a shot by Olaitan Yusuf that hit the right goal post. It was Pender’s first goal on the season.

In addition to Pender’s goal, the Laker defense was stellar throughout. Clayton State goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt made a tremendous save in the ninth save off a shot by the Braves’ Ashley McManus, and then followed with two more key saves late in the second half to seal the victory.

Schmidt recorded three saves for her second shutout on the season. Goalkeeper Whitney Beverly also recorded three saves for UNC-Pembroke (5-7-1, 1-4).

Clayton State returns to Laker Field on Wednesday at 5 p.m., playing host to Peach Belt newcomer Georgia Southwestern.
