Laker women suffer another setback
3-1 against Tusculum
Anounga scores lone Clayton State goal as Lakers fall to 1-5
MORROW,
Ga. --- SEPTEMBER 16, 2006 ---
The frustration of the 2006 women’s
soccer season increased for the Clayton State Lakers on Saturday as they
dropped a 3-1 decision against 15th-ranked Tusculum at Laker
Field. The defeat was the third straight for Clayton State, which drops
to 1-5 overall on the season.
Tusculum jumped out early with two goals in the first half. Courtney
Hambel gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute,
scoring inside the penalty box off a lob cross pass from Kelly Barron.
Two minutes later Tusculum made it 2-0 when Becky Carreiro scored off a
corner kick.
Clayton State trimmed the margin to one when Antoinette Anounga scored
on a header in the 48th minute off a cross from Nkese Udoh.
However, Barron scored the all-important insurance goal for Tusculum in
the 72nd minute off an assist by Theresa Christie.
Laker goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt recorded five saves in the defeat,
while Whitney Wardrop recorded six saves for Tusculum (6-0-1).
Clayton State returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Sept. 24 with a
2 p.m. game at Armstrong Atlantic.
