Sunbul scores twice as Clayton State improves to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in
Peach Belt
MORROW,
Ga. --- SEPTEMBER 30, 2006 ---
The tide may be turning in the right
direction for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team.
After snapping a four-game losing streak on Wednesday against Newberry,
the Lakers got back on the winning track in the Peach Belt Conference
with a 4-0 shutout over visiting Lander on Saturday at Laker Field. The
victory was second straight for Clayton State, which improves to 3-6
overall and 2-2 in the Peach Belt.
It was totally one-sided in favor of Clayton State. The Lakers had a
whopping 33 shots to only three for Lander. However, a strong showing by
Bearcat goalkeeper Rachel Hine kept the game from getting out of hand.
After numerous scoring opportunities, Clayton State grabbed a 1-0
halftime lead when Yasmine Sunbul scored in front of the goal off a
cross by Nkese Udoh in 29th minute.
However, Clayton State broke the game open with three second half goals.
Antoinette Anounga gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead in the 49th
minute with a breakaway goal off an assist by Jennifer Winslett. Sunbul
then scored her second goal off a ricochet shot by Olaitan Yusuf in the
65th minute, and Udoh finished the scoring with a penalty
kick goal in the 67th minute.
Clayton State goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt recorded her second shutout of
the season with a save, while Hine recorded a whopping 14 saves for
Lander.
