Udoh records hat trick as Laker women roll 6-0 over Georgia Southwestern
Yusuf scores twice as Lakers improve to 6-7 overall and 5-2 in Peach Belt

MORROW, Ga. — OCTOBER 11, 2006 — It was only a matter of time before Nkese Udoh and Olaitan Yusuf got their offensive spark going for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team. On Wednesday night, it was time.

Udoh recorded a hat trick, while Yusuf scored her first two goals of the season as the Lakers rolled to an impressive 6-0 victory over visiting Georgia Southwestern in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field. After a 1-6 start, Clayton State has now won three straight games and five of its last six to improve to 6-7 overall and 5-2 in the Peach Belt.

The Lakers took care of business in first half with five goals. Udoh scored her first five minutes into the game off an assist by Jennifer Winslett, and then scored her second in the 24th minute off a steal. Yusuf, a two-time All-American with 56 career goals entering her junior season, finally broke through with her first goal of the season in the 27th minute off an assist from Udoh.

Clayton State wasn’t done. Udoh made it three in the 30th minute off a double assist from Yasemin Sunbul and Yusuf to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Finally, in the 38th minute, Sunbul scored her seventh goal of the season on a 30-yard strike from the left flank.

Yusuf took care of the scoring in the second half with a breakaway goal in the 84th minute.

It was as one-sided as possible for Clayton State as the Lakers had 42 shots to only two for Georgia Southwestern (3-8, 1-5). Laker goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt recorded her second straight shutout and fourth on the season with one save. She has allowed only one goal in her last three games.

Georgia Southwestern goalkeeper Christy Drabek recorded 11 saves for the Hurricanes.

Clayton State plays host to Lincoln Memorial on Homecoming Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Laker Field.
