Lakers fall 3-0 in Peach Belt Conference action at Columbus State

Clayton State now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in PBC with nationally-ranked Tusculum on the horizon

 

COLUMBUS, Ga. --- SEPTEMBER 13, 2006 --- The Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team aimed to gain the upper hand in the race for the lead in the Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer race on Wednesday at rival Columbus State. However, it was the host Cougars that gained the upper hand as they handed Clayton State a 3-0 defeat at the Columbus State Soccer Complex.

The defeat drops the Lakers to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt.

It was a game controlled by Columbus State. The Cougars out-shot Clayton State 22-6, including 10-3 on shots on goal. Columbus State took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute off a goal by Gina Goforth off an assist by Sarah Hawkins. The Cougars made it 2-0 in the 37th minute when Krystin Mills scored off an assist by Rachel Walthall.

Hannah Ospina finished the Cougar scoring in the 55th minute with a goal off an assist by Megan Honig.

Clayton State goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt recorded seven assists in the defeat, while Monica Sanchez recorded three saves for Columbus State (5-1, 3-0).

Clayton State returns to Laker Field on Saturday evening, playing host to 15th-ranked Tusculum at 5:30 p.m.
