Clayton State women fall 3-1 against visiting Catawba

Anounga scores lone goal as Lakers fall to 1-3 overall

MORROW, Ga. --- SEPTEMBER 10, 2006 --- Fresh of its first victory of the 2006 women’s soccer season, the Clayton State Lakers could not keep up the momentum on Sunday as they dropped a 3-1 decision against visiting Catawba at Laker Field. The defeat drops Clayton State to 1-3 overall on the season.

It took little time for the Lakers to get the early advantage, and a familiar source provided the spark. In the sixth minute, Antoinette Anounga took a pass on the breakaway from Nkese Udoh and out-raced the Indian defense for the game’s first goal and a 1-0 Clayton State lead.

After that, however, Catawba took control as the Indians answered with two goals. Tasha Wilhelm tied the game with a goal in the 15th minute off an assist by Kim Crowley. Catawba then took a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute as Lauren Whiteley scored off an assist by McKenzie Burman.

In the second half, Clayton State could not penetrate the stellar Indian defensive back line. In addition, Catawba nailed the back-breaker goal in the 78th minute as Kathryn DeRodes scored in transition on an assist by Lindsay Hinkle.

Clayton State goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt recorded six saves in the defeat, while Catawba goalkeeper Kathleen Blake recorded three saves.

Clayton State is back in action on Wednesday with a Peach Belt Conference showdown at Columbus State at 5 p.m.
