Laker women drop 6-1 decision at
fourth-ranked Carson-Newman

Anounga scores lone Clayton State in battle of Division II Top 25 teams

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- SEPTEMBER 3, 2006 --- The Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team hoped to gain a measure of revenge on Sunday at Carson-Newman in a rematch of last season’s NCAA Division II National Tournament first round game. However, the home standing Lady Eagles had too much firepower as they defeated Clayton State 6-1 at McCown Field.

In a matchup of two Division II Top 25 teams, 19th-ranked Clayton State dropped to 0-2 overall, while fourth-ranked Carson-Newman improved to 3-0 overall.

Early on, it looked like Clayton State would match Carson-Newman goal for goal. The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on a goal by Megan Julian. However, Clayton State answered with the equalizer in the eighth minute on a goal by Antoinette Anounga.

But Carson-Newman broke the game open with five unanswered goals, including three by Division II All-American Rebecca Angus. She gave the Lady Eagles a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 12th minute, and then added goals in the 19th and 87th minutes. In addition, Julian scored her second goal in the 46th minute
and Zarmena Kasparites scored a goal in the 66th minute.

Clayton State aims to get on the winning track on Friday, opening Peach Belt Conference play at North Georgia at 4 p.m.
