Clayton State women drop tough 2-1 overtime showdown at Armstrong Atlantic
Sunbul scores lone Laker goal as Clayton State now stands 1-6 overall

SAVANNAH, Ga. --- SEPTEMBER 24, 2006 --- The breaks have been hard to come by this season for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team, and that was evident on Sunday. In a Peach Belt Conference showdown at Armstrong Atlantic, the Lakers dropped a tough 2-1 decision in overtime against the Pirates at Cingular Field.

The defeat is the fourth straight for Clayton State, which falls to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt.

The Lakers took an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a long-range goal by Yasemin Sunbul. It was her second goal of the season as Clayton State controlled the tempo for most of the first half. Clayton State goalkeeper Lindsay Schmidt kept the Armstrong Atlantic attack at bay with three crucial first half saves.

The Pirates, however, recorded the equalizer in the 48th minute as Jamie Craine buried a shot from the left side of the box off an assist by Kayley Ralton. The score ended 1-1 at the end of regulation, but in the first overtime period, Armstrong Atlantic came through with the game-winner on a goal from the top of the penalty box by Kristin Burton.

Schmidt recorded six saves for Clayton State, while Pirate goalkeeper Samantha Held recorded seven saves. Armstrong Atlantic out-shot Clayton State 24-15.

Clayton State returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m., playing host to Newberry at Laker Field.
