2005 Laker Season

NO. 23 CARSON-NEWMAN DOWNS NO. 16 CLAYTON STATE 2-0 IN NCAA TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. ---  No. 23 Carson-Newman defeated No. 16 Clayton State 2-0 in first-round action at the NCAA Division II Women’s Southeast Regional on Friday at Pioneer Field.  The third-seeded Eagles advance to the regional final, where they will face fourth-seeded Catawba on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s Southeast Regional Championship.

C-N improves to 15-4 on the season, while Clayton State, which entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, concludes its season with a 15-3-2 mark.

Carson-Newman scored one goal in each half en route to its victory.  Claire Ramsdale (Birmingham, England) put the Eagles on the board in the 32nd minute when she headed in a pass from Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) from about five yards out.

C-N added its insurance goal in the 60th minute when Erica Stegner (Nicholasville, Ky.) drove in a shot from about five yards out off a pass from Jennifer Bock (Stevensville, Mich.).

The Eagles out-shot the Lakers by an 18-7 margin and took 11 corner kicks to Clayton State’s one.  C-N goalkeeper Nyssa Griffin (Adelaide, Australia) recorded four saves, while Judith Chime (Enugu, Nigeria) made two stops for CSU.

"I am absolutely delighted on how our team played tonight, “ Carson-Newman head coach Phil McNamara said.  “The team was fantastic from the first minute. We were very well organized, disciplined and very focused on keeping some of Clayton's talented players quiet."

"We have been waiting all season to play our best soccer and better late than never, "  added McNamara.

"We played a good team tonight,” Clayton State head coach T.O. Totty said.  “They (Carson-Newman) played well and deserved the win. The weather played a factor (being cold)... not making excuses, but we didn't handle the sudden drop in temperature. We didn't play as well as we are capable."

"We have made wonderful progress this season. Making the NCAA Tournament is a fine accomplishment. We need to build on this and learn from this experience."

Clayton State captures 2005 PBC Tournament title with 2-1 OT victory over Columbus Sat.

Columbus, GA --- November 5, 2005 --- Clayton State's Nkese Udoh ran down a loose ball off a pass from Jennifer Powell and beat Columbus State's Monica Sanchez in the first overtime period Saturday to lift the Lakers to a 2-1 win and the Championship of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Columbus.

The Lakers move to 15-2-2 with the win, while CSU is now 15-6-1. The two teams will now await the decision on the four teams to be chosen for the NCAA regional. The Tournament Championship for the Lakers comes on the heels of the squad sharing the regular season title with the Cougars. The title is also the first Tournament crown for the program after playing in the Tournament Championship game three out of the last four seasons.

Clayton State took the lead with Olaitin Yusuf's fifth goal of the tournament and 21st of the season in the 40th minute. Yusuf took a perfect crossing pass from Udoh and was able to net a spinning, almost 180-degree, kick past Sanchez for the 1-0 lead at the 39:43 mark.

Laker keeper Judith Chime had dodged three bullets in the first half as Columbus State was unable to connect from point-blank range, seeing two kicks go just wide and another just over the cross bar. The Lakers carried the 1-0 lead into the half.

It appeared as if Clayton State would earn the shutout as their defense looked impenetrable for most of the second half, but CSU finally broke through with the game-tying goal at the 79:00 mark. Megan Honig served in a corner kick that a Laker defender got her head on, but Brook Snyder took the deflection and hammered it into the upper right portion of the net to knot the score at 1-1. Snyder got another chance in the 89th minute and almost got the game-winner, but her kick was just high and over the cross bar.

Clayton State went on the attack in the overtime period and scored just less than five minutes in. CSU cleared the ball out of the zone, but Powell was able to stop the ball and deliver an almost perfect serve which Udoh ran down and netted to start the celebration.

For the game, the Lakers held a 10-9 advantage in shots, while Columbus State held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Sanchez had two saves for CSU, while Chime collected five saves for Clayton State.

Udoh was named the PBC Tournament MVP, while teammates Jennifer Winslett, Loretta Ashu, and Cassandra Rapaich were named to the All-Tournament team. CSU placed Kellie Myles, Brook Snyder, and Sarah Hawkins on the squad, as well.

The NCAA Region committee will make its decision this week on the four participants for the regional will be. Columbus State was fourth in last week's poll, while Clayton State was fifth. The decision will be announced early next week.

Clayton State women’s soccer advances to 2005 PBC Tournament title game; to face Columbus State in duel of regular season co-champions

Columbus, GA — November 4, 2005 – Clayton State and Columbus State shared the 2005 Peach Belt Conference regular season championship, but on Saturday, one team will walk away with the 2005 Peach Belt Conference Tournament title.

For the third time in the last four years, the Laker women’s soccer team has advanced to the 2005 PBC Tournament Championship game with a 5-1 victory over Armstrong State Friday in the semifinals. Columbus State moved on to the final with a 2-0 win over UNC Pembroke in the other semifinal game. Kickoff for Saturday’s duel between the regular season co-champions will be 2 p.m. at Columbus State.

Clayton State was led the by the dynamic duo of Olaitan Yusuf and Nkese Udoh in the victory over the Pirates. Yusuf scored three goals and added an assist, while Udoh added two more goals with one assist. Yusuf and Udoh lead the Peach Belt in scoring with 20 and 17 goals, respectively.

With the win, Clayton State improves to 14-2-2 on the season, setting a new school record for victories in a season. Armstrong State falls to 11-8 on the year.

Both teams were tentative in the first half with Clayton State applying the bulk of the pressure and finally breaking through at the 19:22 mark, as Yusuf, who was named the PBC Player of the Year before the game, received a pass from Jennifer Powell and beat AASU keeper Lisa Gray. But that was the only score of the first half as Clayton State outshot AASU 7-2.

The second half also got off to a slow start as the teams traded opportunities for the first 15 minutes. Yusuf put an end to that as Udoh played a perfect ball right down the middle, allowing Yusuf to streak through four AASU defenders to beat Gray one on one. Udoh struck 13 minutes later as Yusuf this time played a cross that Udoh headed home.

AASU was not without their chances, outshooting Clayton State 11-7 in the second half. Shana Neves took a shot that Clayton keeper Judith Chime had to tip over the crossbar. Later, AASU picked up their lone goal of the game as Neves put home a penalty kick after a Laker was charged with a handball in the box.

Yusuf scored then what may be the goal of the tournament as she dribbled through the entire AASU defense to put the ball home for a 4-1 lead. Udoh finished the scoring as Deahdra Bowier played a perfect give-and-go pass that led to another breakaway.

Clayton State and Columbus State will meet for the second time this season in the championship game. Columbus State handed Clayton State their only conference loss of the season 1-0 on the Lakers’ home field.

Udoh scored three goals last week and has six goals in her last three matches, including four goals in two Peach Belt wins. #6 Clayton State women’s soccer blanks Armstrong State 2-0 Saturday; to host Columbus State Wed.

Morrow, GA – October 1, 2005 --- The sixth-ranked Clayton State University women’s soccer team took over sole possession of first place in the Peach Belt Conference, blanking Armstrong Atlantic State University 2-0 Saturday at Laker Field.

She took a midfield pass from junior Cassandra Rapaich, beat Armstrong State keeper Lisa Gray and slid a shot from 18 yards out with a left-footed kick in the lower left of the net.

Armstrong State’s best opportunity to score came in the second half when the Pirates banged in a shot off a deflection from Laker keeper Judith Chime but the goal was nullified after AASU was offside on the initial shot. Freshman Lyndsi Stricklen also had a shot from point blank range in the first half only to have her attempt miss the mark.

With the win, the Lakers improve to a program best 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State’s Yusuf named
Peach Belt Conference Player of Week

Morrow, GA --- September 13, 2005 --- For the second time in as many weeks, a player off the Clayton State University women’s soccer team has been selected the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week.

This time it is the squad’s sophomore sensation Olaitan Yusuf. Last year’s NCAA Division II scoring leader, Yusuf led the 12th-ranked Lakers to one of its biggest wins in school history Sunday, defeating fifth-ranked Carson-Newman.

The 5-8 sophomore forward scored all three goals in the team’s 3-1 win over C-N and currently leads the Peach Belt Conference with five goals and one assist on the year. She set a Peach Belt record last year with 35 goals. Her multi-goal game against Carson-Newman marked the 19th time in 24 career games that Yusuf has scored one or more goals in a match.

The win over Carson-Newman improved the Laker squad to 3-1 on the season and avenged a 3-2 loss to the Eagles in last year’s first round of the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships.

Yusuf is the second straight PBC Player of Week selection for the Laker women, as junior Nkese Udoh was the first Peach Belt honoree last week. Udoh scored three goals in the team’s first two matches of the season.

Clayton State will return to action on Saturday, hosting North Georgia College & State Univeristy in its Peach Belt Conference opener. Kickoff for the match is 7:30 p.m. at Laker Field.

Morrow, GA – September 11, 2005 --- The Clayton State University women’s soccer team pulled off one of the biggest wins in school history in its home opener Sunday at Laker Field.

The 12th-ranked Lakers stunned fifth-ranked Carson-Newman 3-1 behind a trio of goals from sophomore sensation Olaitan Yusuf. The win avenges a loss to the Eagles in last year’s first round of the NCAA Soccer Championships.

Yusuf scored her first goal of the match 15 minutes into play off a pass from Antionette Anouga. She added another goal with eight minutes remaining in the half off a pass from junior Nkese Udoh.

Last year’s NCAA Division II scoring leader, Yusuf, scored her third and final goal of the match at the 76th minute mark off a pass from sophomore Yasmin Sunbul. Carson-Newman cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 90th minute on a goal from Vicki Farquhar off a direct kick.

Carson-Newman outshot the Lakers 11-6 in the match and Clayton State senior keeper Judith Chime finished with seven saves, while C-N goalie Melissa Terrell had two. The Lakers finished the final 30 minutes a player down.

With the win, the Lakers improve 3-1 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 3-2 on the year. Clayton State will return to action on Saturday, September 17th in its Peach Belt Conference opener, hosting North Georgia College & State University in a 7:30 p.m. match.

The Laker women fell behind early on two quick first half goals and were unable to answer until late in the match on a goal by junior Nkese Udoh in the 87th minute. The goal was off an assist from freshman Allie Peterson.

Clayton State forward Udoh named Peach Belt
Conference Player of the Week

Morrow, GA --- September 7, 2005 --- Clayton State University junior forward Nkese Udoh scored three goals in a pair of Laker victories, and her play did not go unnoticed by the Peach Belt Conference office.

Udoh (River-State, Nigeria) was named Wednesday the Peach Belt women’s soccer Player of the Week after leading the 12th-ranked Lakers to a 2-0 win at Newberry College and a 3-1 victory over Presbyterian College.

She had two goals in the Presbyterian match, including the game winner and one goal against Newberry. Even more impressive, her three goals on the season have come on only six shots. It is the second year in a row, the Lakers had the first PBC Player of the Week of a season, as All-America and NCAA scoring leader Olaitan Yusuf was named the first PBC Player of the Week last year.

Clayton State is 2-0 on the season and vaulted in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings at 12th on Tuesday, a first for the women’s soccer program.  The Lakers will return to action on Friday, traveling to Tusculum College before returning home for what is arguably the biggest home match in Laker women’s soccer history.

The Lakers will host fifth-ranked Carson-Newman College at 2 p.m. on Sunday, the same Eagle team that ended the Clayton State women’ season in the first round of the NCAA Soccer Championships. With all its starters returning from last year, C-N is off to a 3-1 start after finishing last year with a 19-3-2 record.

Clayton State soccer teams ranked 7th and 12th in NSCAA national soccer poll

Morrow, GA --- September 6, 2005 --- Both the Clayton State University men’s and women’s soccer teams have opened their seasons with strong play and were rewarded Tuesday, climbing up the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

The men’s team is currently tied for seventh in the national poll, moving up from 14th, while the women’s squad has cracked the Top 25 for the first time in school history, vaulting up to 12th in the national rankings.

The Laker men are currently 3-1-1 on the season and are coming off a 1-1 tie to Eckerd on Sunday. CSU’s top win in the young season, a 1-0 overtime thriller, came against Queen’s University of Charlotte, a team that entered season ranked 22nd in the country.

Clayton State’s women’s squad has opened the season with two straight wins on the road, defeating Newberry College 2-0 and Presbyterian College 3-1. The Laker women are the only Peach Belt Conference squad in the rankings. Clayton State received votes for the national top-25 in the preseason poll.

The seventh place ranking for the men’s team is the second highest ranking in school history. The program rose to a fourth place ranking in the 2002 season after finishing the 2000 campaign at 14th and the 2001 season 13th in the country.

Along with the Clayton State men, Peach Belt Conference opponent the University of South Carolina Upstate is ranked in the top-25, coming in at 15th with a 3-0 record on the season.

Both the Clayton State men’s and women’s teams will return to action this weekend. The women’s team will travel to face Tusculum College on Friday before returning home on Sunday to face fifth-ranked Carson-Newman College in a 2 p.m. contest.  The home opener for the women’s team will be a rematch against C-N, a squad that ended the Lakers season last year in the first round of the NCAA Soccer Championships.

After a two-game road trip last weekend, the men’s team will return home to host Florida Institute of Technology in a 4 p.m. match on Saturday.

Clayton State women’s soccer improves to 2-0 with 3-1 win over Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – The Clayton State University women’s soccer team jumped out to a quick two-goal lead at halftime and never looked back, taking a 3-1 victory over Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

Nkese Udoh (Edo-State, Nigeria) took a pass from Olaitan Yusuf (Ilorin, Nigeria) and knocked it past PC goalkeeper Erin Sinkuler (Roswell, GA) in the first minute to give the Lakers an early 1-0 lead.

Udoh found the net again in the 40th minute, this time off a pass from Antionette Anouga (Yaounde, Cameroon) to put Clayton State on top by two.

Yusuf added the Lakers third goal of the afternoon in the 79th minute, before the Lady Blue Hose finally got on the board in the 83rd minute on a goal by Claire Joyce (Aiken, S.C.).

Clayton State will be back in action Friday, traveling to Greeneville, TN to take on Tusculum College in an 8 pm contest.

Clayton State women’s soccer opens season with 2-0 win over Newberry

Newberry, SC--- AUGUST 27, 2005 --- The Clayton State University women’s soccer team opened the season on a positive note Saturday, downing Newberry College 2-0 in Newberry, SC.

Clayton State junior Olaitan Yusuf, the nation’s leading scorer last year, picked up where she left off last season, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead 37 minutes in to the match. Yusuf scored the goal off a rebound from a Yasemin Sunbul shot.

After more than 35 minutes of scoreless play, the Lakers pushed their lead to 2-0 with a penalty kick goal by Nkese Udoh. Clayton State finished with six shots in the match compared to only three for Newberry.

Senior keeper Judith Chime recorded her first shutout of the season with one save. Danielle Beckerle had two saves for the Indians.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 1-0 on the season, while Newberry drops to 0-1-1. Clayton State will return to action on Saturday, September 3rd traveling to face Presbyterian College in a 2 p.m. match.

Clayton State women’s soccer edged by USC Upstate as favorite to capture 2005 PBC Championship

Morrow, GA --- August 18, 2005 --- By the narrowest margin in PBC history, the USC Upstate Spartans edged out the Clayton State University Lakers to be the favorite to capture the 2005 women’s soccer championship according to a poll of the league’s head coaches released Thursday.

Clayton State finished one point behind USC Upstate in the preseason poll with 59 points compared to Upstate’s 60 points. The Lakers received four of eight possible first place votes, a trio of second place votes and one third place vote. The Spartans had five first place ones, three runner-up votes and a single third place vote.

Behind Clayton State, Columbus State University was picked third, followed by the University of North Carolina Pembroke and Lander University rounding out the top five. Armstrong Atlantic State University, which is fielding a team for the first time this fall, was picked sixth, in front of GC&SU. Newcomer to the Peach Belt North Georgia College & State University was picked eighth, followed by the University of South Carolina Aiken.

The second place Peach Belt preseason pick is the highest for the Laker women’s program with the previous best being a fourth place prediction in the 2002 season.

Coming off its most successful season in school history with a 13-6-1 record last year, expectations are high for the Lakers this fall. The Lakers return nine starters, including two of the nation’s best players at their respective positions in forward Olaitan Yusuf and goalkeeper Judith Chime.

Yusuf led the nation in scoring and points per game last year finishing with 35 goals and 74 points, both school and Peach Belt Conference single season records. She was named an All-America, All-Region and the PBC Freshman of the Year. On the defensive side, the Lakers return one of the nation’s top goalkeepers in 2004 All-Region and three-time All-Peach Belt keeper Judith Chime. She holds CSU’s all-time goals against average of 1.35 in three seasons of play.

In addition to the wealth of talent returning, head coach Totty Totty, who led the Lakers to the NCAA Soccer Championships for the first time in school history last year, has assembled his strongest recruiting class in his seven years at Clayton State.

A pair of potential All-Americas in Antoinette Anounga and Nkese Udoh lead the in incoming class and should make an immediate impact.  Both Udoh and Anounga, who like Yusuf have Nigerian national team experience, starred at Lindsey Wilson College the last two seasons. The duo helped lead the NAIA school in Kentucky to a national championship in 2004 and a national runner-up finish in 2003. Udoh was an NAIA All-America in 2003 scoring 39 goals, while Anounga made the NAIA National Tournament All-Tournament team and was All-Mid-South Conference, scoring 22 goals in 2003.

The Laker women will kick off the season on the road, traveling to face Newberry College on Saturday, Aug. 27th. Clayton State’s first home match will be on Sunday, Sept. 11th in one of its stiffest tests of the season. The squad will host third-ranked Carson-Newman College, a team that ended the Lakers season last year in the NCAA Soccer Championships. The Eagles, champions of the South Atlantic Conference, last year, finished with a 20-3-1 record last season and No. 3 ranking in the nation, advancing to the NCAA Final Four.

Below is the 2005 preseason coaches poll. Teams receiving a first-place vote were awarded eight points, second place seven points and so on. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. The 2005 women’s soccer season begins on Aug. 25 and continues on to the PBC Tournament which begins Nov. 1.

Clayton State women’s soccer program announces 2005 schedule; set to open 11th season

Morrow, GA --- August 4, 2005 --- The Clayton State University women’s soccer team surprised a lot of opponents in 2004, evidenced by having the second best improvement in one season among all NCAA Division II teams last season.

In 2005, head coach Totty Totty’s Lakers will try to build on that success, but it won’t come easy as the program has announced its schedule, arguably the toughest in school history.  Along with Clayton State’s formidable eight-game Peach Belt Conference schedule, the Lakers have eight non-conference matches against several of the top programs in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region.

The Lakers will kick off the season with four straight region matches against teams from the South Atlantic Conference, all of whom finished with winning records last year. The squad’s opener will be on the road, traveling to face Newberry College on Saturday, Aug. 27th, followed by traveling to Presbyterian College on Saturday, Sept. 3rd, and remaining on the road for a Friday, Sept. 9th match at Tusculum College.

Clayton State will return for its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 11th in one of its stiffest tests of the season, hosting Carson-Newman College, the team that ended the Lakers season last year in the NCAA Soccer Championships. The Eagles, champions of the SAC last year, finished with a 20-3-1 record last season and No. 3 ranking in the nation, advancing to the NCAA Final Four. The Lakers will try to avenge a 3-2 loss to C-N in last year’s national tournament.

The Lakers will open its Peach Belt Conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 17th, hosting North Georgia College & State University, a new member to the Peach Belt this season. Kickoff for the match is 7:30 p.m. and will be the first women’s match under CSU’s newly lighted field.

A couple of other matches to circle on the calendar will be Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 15th and Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 23rd. The Lakers will host the University of North Carolina Pembroke for Homecoming in a 1 p.m. match. UNCP finished last season with a 12-5-2 overall record and was just behind the Lakers in the Peach Belt standings. For Senior Day, Clayton State will host the University of South Carolina Upstate, a club that finished with a 12-2-3 record last season and was second in the Peach Belt.

In addition to these home matches, Clayton State will host PBC opponents Armstrong Atlantic State University and Columbus State University along with non-conference foes Lenoir-Rhyne College and North Greenville College.

The Lakers will host AASU, entering its first season of soccer in the PBC, on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., followed by Columbus on Wednesday, Oct. 5th at 6 p.m. LRC will visit Clayton State on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m., and the Lakers will host North Greenville on Wednesday, Oct. 26th at 4:30 p.m.

Clayton State is coming of its finest season in school history, finishing last season with a 13-6-1 record, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time. Totty, entering his eighth season, led the Lakers to the second biggest turnaround in NCAA Division II, going from 4-14-1 in 2003 to last year’s 13-win season.

Expectations for 2005 are high, as Clayton State returns last year’s freshman sensation in Olaitan Yusuf. She led the nation in scoring and points per game finishing with 35 goals and 74 points, both school and Peach Belt Conference single season records. Yusuf was named an All-America, All-Region and the PBC Freshman of the Year. On the defensive side, the Lakers return one of the nation’s top goalkeepers in 2004 All-Region and three-time All-Peach Belt keeper Judith Chime. She holds CSU’s all-time goals against average of 1.35 in three seasons of play.

The Lakers will have a major hole to fill with the graduation of All-America and 2004 Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Nkiru Okosieme. One of the world’s only 4-time World Cup players, Okosieme finished her career with 62 goals and 24 assists in three years of play at Clayton State. She is the all-time PBC scoring leader and ranks among the all-time best in NCAA history.

To fill Okosieme’s void, Totty has assembled the school’s top recruiting class, signing a number of national caliber players. Top on the list will be two Nigerian players that starred at Lindsey Wilson College in Nkese Udoh and Antoinette Anounga. Both Udoh and Anounga started at the NAIA school that was the national runner-up in 2003 and the national champion in 2004. Udoh was an NAIA All-America in 2003 scoring 39 goals, while Anounga made the NAIA National Tournament All-Tournament team and was All-Mid-South Conference, scoring 22 goals in 2003. Totty also signed another talented Nigerian player in freshman Bose Tanimola, who was a national team pool player, and will welcome UNC Pembroke transfer Yasemin Sunbul, who played in 18 matches for the Braves last year.

In addition to Yusuf and Chime, the Lakers return nine other starters from last year’s record-setting team, including former All-PBC player Cassandra Rapaich, defensive standout Lairin King and ‘04 PBC assists leader Jennifer Winslett.
