AUGUSTINE, Fla. – January 29, 2011 –
Heading into the 2010-11 season, no women's basketball program in Peach Belt Conference history had
accomplished seven straight 20-victory seasons.
Not until Saturday.
With four players scoring in double-figures, the No. 2-ranked Clayton State Laker women's basketball team remained undefeated for the season with an 85-67 victory at Flagler College in Peach Belt action Saturday afternoon. Clayton State is now 20-0 overall and 9-0 in the Peach Belt. Head coach Dennis Cox's Lakers become the first women's program in Peach Belt history to reach seven straight 20-victory seasons.
Flagler falls to 4-13 overall and 1-8 in the Peach Belt.
"It's been a body of work that we take a lot pride in here," said Clayton State head coach Dennis Cox. "There have been a lot of great programs in this conference, so this is flattering and it really means a lot to us. It all starts in your league."
Unlike recent games, Clayton State took control of this game early. The Lakers shot a whopping 63 percent from the field in the first half, including 50 percent from 3-point range, to take a 48-25 lead at halftime.
Clayton State utilized a 13-2 run midway through the first half to gain some separation. A fast-break lay-up by Latonda Bruce gave the Lakers a 27-12 lead with 8:34 remaining. Drameka Griggs then scored seven straight points, including a 3-point play on a fastbreak at the 7:37 mark to give Clayton State a commanding 34-12 lead.
The Lakers' largest lead in the first half was 24 points on two occasions. Tanisha Woodard's lay-up with 3:37 remaining gave Clayton State a 41-17 lead and a lay-up by Kayla Mobley at the 2:10 mark made the Laker lead 43-19.
"We played with a lot of energy in the first half and that's what we talked about beforehand," Cox said. "Griggs was a big spark for us off the bench in the first half and the press was very effective."
The Lady Saints would not get any closer than 17 points in the second half. Clayton State, meanwhile, used a 16-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Breanna Fort started the rally with two straight lay-ups. Woodard finished the rally with five points, including consecutive lay-ups to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game 79-48 with 5:21 remaining.
Teshymia Tillman paced the balanced Laker scoring attack with 17 points while Woodard scored 14 points. Griggs scored 12 points off the bench and Fort recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Shelbi Lindsey scored a game-high 20 points for Flagler followed by Adrienne Donelson with 16 points and Tierra Ford with 15 points.
Clayton State returns home on Wednesday, playing host to Georgia Southwestern at the Athletics and Fitness Center for a scheduled 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
