 MORROW,
Ga. – January 23, 2010 –
The Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team knew it was in for a
battle against visiting North Georgia on Saturday night, and it was
just that.
However, behind the strong play of both Teshymia Tillman and
LaDe’Sha Stoudemire, the Lakers out-lasted the Lady Saints 72-63 in
Peach Belt Conference action at the Athletics and Fitness Center. 19th-ranked
Clayton State improves to 14-3 overall and 5-2 in the Peach Belt,
staying a half-game behind Georgia College in the PBC West Division.
Having struggled in last couple of games offensively, Tillman came
back alive for the Lakers on Saturday, scoring 20 points and dishing
out six assists. Inside, Stoudemire put together a work-like
performance with an 11-point, 18-rebound double-double. In addition,
she tied the Clayton State single-game mark for offensive rebounds
with 11.
However, it took a while for Clayton State to get on track
offensively. North Georgia built an early 13-point lead in the first
half and held a 26-15 lead with 5:36 remaining on a jump shot by
Sarah Stinson.
That’s when the Lakers went on a 13-2 run to tie the game. Tillman
started the rally with three straight free throws, followed by a
lay-up each from Breanna Fort and Tanisha Woodard. Stoudemire then
tied the game on two straight lay-ups, her second at the 1:41 mark
knotted the game 28-28 all.
With the score tied at halftime, Clayton State took the lead and
three times stretched its lead to nine points. A lay-up by Fort gave
the Lakers a 51-42 lead with 112:14 remaining. But North Georgia
countered with a 13-2 run to take a two-point lead. Meredith
Montgomery and Janyce Ealey both hit 3-point baskets to give the
Lady Saints a 55-53 lead with 6:03 remaining.
But Tillman answered with two straight 3-point baskets of her own,
and the Lakers never looked back. Woodard and Brittany Hall followed
with 3-point baskets, and a lay-up by Hall at the 2:58 mark gave
Clayton State its largest lead 67-55.
In addition to Tillman and Stoudemire, Woodard scored 18 points with
six rebounds, six assists and six steals. The Lakers shot 41 percent
from 3-point range and forced 31 North Georgia turnovers.
For North Georgia (5-10, 1-6 PBC), Whitney Randolph recorded a
double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ealey scored 14 points
and Danielle Seeley added 12 points off the bench for the Lady
Saints.
Clayton State continues its current home-stand on Wednesday night,
