Sophomore forward
scores 23 points as Lakers improve to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in Peach
Belt
Box Score
MORROW,
Ga. – January 27, 2010
– Tanisha Woodard equaled her career-high in scoring and
the Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team used a tremendous
second-half effort to pull away with an 83-64 Peach Belt Conference
victory over visiting Armstrong Atlantic at the Athletics and
Fitness Center.
The victory was the third straight for the 18th-ranked
Lakers, now 15-3 overall and 6-2 in the Peach Belt. Armstrong
Atlantic falls to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in the PBC.
Woodard, a sophomore forward from Rome, Ga., tied her career-high in
scoring with 23 points and was one of three Lakers in
double-figures. Junior guard Teshymia Tillman scored 16 points – all
in the second half – and senior forward LaDe’Sha Stoudemire recorded
her second straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
However, Armstrong Atlantic stayed toe-to-toe with the Lakers
throughout the first half. There were six ties and five lead-changes
as the Lady Pirates twice built a five-point lead. A 3-point basket
by Lauren Green gave Armstrong Atlantic a 20-15 lead at the 12:16
mark, and a lay-up by Marissa Rimbert increased the Lady Pirate lead
to 22-17 with 10:37 remaining.
Clayton State countered with a 9-0 run to take a four-point lead,
and a 14-foot jumper by Breanna Fort gave the Lakers a 33-28 lead
with 1:37 remaining. But Armstrong Atlantic closed out the half
strong as Portia Jones’ 3-point basket tied the game 33-33 at
halftime.
The Lady Pirates kept within striking distance for the first five
minutes of the second half before the Lakers made their love.
Brittany Hall drained a 3-point basket, and then consecutive lay-ups
by Lesheria Stevens in transition gave Clayton State a 53-42 lead at
the 13:12 mark. A Tillman lay-up increased the Laker lead to 57-44
with 12:04 remaining.
Armstrong Atlantic would not get any closer than 10 points after
that. Four times, Clayton State pushed its lead to 16 points. The
Lakers’ largest lead of the game was 21 points, 83-62 on a lay-up by
Stevens with 18 seconds remaining.
Stevens, who was slowed by an injury during the early part of the
season, is starting to come around with nine points, six rebounds
and six assists for Clayton State. Tillman also added six assists as
well for the Lakers, who shot 89 percent from the free throw line.
For Armstrong Atlantic, Jones scored 17 points and Hall scored 15
points. Clayton State held the Lady Pirates to 36 percent shooting
from the field, including 26 percent from 3-point range.
Clayton State concludes a five-game Peach Belt Conference home-stand
on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against PBC newcomer Flagler. |
