Clayton State women
host Southern Polytechnic State in preseason exhibition
23rd-ranked
Lakers battle neighboring NAIA rival in final tune-up for 2008-09
season
 MORROW,
Ga. – November 10, 2008 –
Clayton State Laker women’s basketball fans can get an early
glimpse of the 2008-09 Laker women on Tuesday when Clayton State
plays host to neighboring NAIA rival Southern Polytechnic State on
Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
This is the second straight season that these two teams have squared
off in the preseason. Last season, the Lakers won a 73-71 squeaker
in which Clayton State needed a last-second blocked shot to preserve
the victory.
Under fifth-year head coach Dennis Cox, Clayton State is coming off
a strong 20-11 season in the 2007-08 season, winning its third Peach
Belt Conference regular season championship in the last four seasons
and advancing to the NCAA Division II "Sweet 16." The Lakers return
three starters off last season’s squad and seven players all
together.
Clayton State is nationally-ranked in two preseason Division II
polls – 21 st
in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25 and 23rd
in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coach’s Poll.
Southern Polytechnic State, out of Marietta, is starting to make its
move as a young program. Under head coach Nathan Teymer, the Hornets
are coming off a solid 18-13 campaign in the 2007-08 season,
including 12-8 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. The
Hornets are 3-1 currently on the young season.
Clayton State officially opens the 2008-09 season on Saturday
against Barry in the Marriot Tip-Off Classic at Nova Southeastern. |
