USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll

Second-highest national ranking final ever for 26-7 Lakers

MORROW, Ga. – March 31, 2009 – Fresh off advancing to the 2009 NCAA Division II "Elite Eight" last week in San Antonio, the Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team finished the season officially ranked 11th in the final 2009 USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. The poll was released on Tuesday.

This marks the second-highest final ranking in a season for Clayton State in women’s basketball. The 2006-07 Laker squad finished fourth in the nation after advancing to the NCAA Division II "Final Four."

Clayton State finished the season 26-7 overall, marking the second-most victories in a season for a Laker squad. The Lakers finished second in the Peach Belt Conference, and reached both the 20-victory mark and the NCAA Division II National Tournament for a fifth straight season. The NCAA Division II "Elite Eight" appearance was the second in the last three seasons for Clayton State.

Head coach Dennis Cox’s team is one of two from the Peach Belt Conference in the final Division II ranking. Francis Marion, whom Clayton State knocked off 89-73 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship or Division II "Sweet 16," finished 14
th
in the poll. In addition, Lander received votes.
