Clayton State women
make it eight straight with 80-69 victory over Augusta State
Lakers improve to 8-1
overall and 2-0 in Peach Belt as Jennings, Woodard each score 14
points

Ga. – January 3, 2009 –
The Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team got more than it
bargained for on Saturday in its Peach Belt Conference showdown
against visiting Augusta State. However, the Lakers pulled away in
the second half for an 80-69 victory at the Athletics and Fitness
Center.
The victory improves Clayton State to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the
Peach Belt Conference.
Augusta State came into the game short-handed with three starters,
including its two leading scorers, suspended. Still, the
opportunistic Jaguars got the better of the Lakers in a first half
that had eight ties and seven lead-changes.
Clayton State built a 20-14 lead on a lay-up by Tanisha Woodard with
8:24 remaining. However, Augusta State rode the hot hand of Jasmine
Godwin and wiped out the Laker lead with a 10-0 run.
Porsha White, Kenisha Sheppard and Brooke Johnson each connected on
consecutive jump shots, and a lay-up by Brittany Hudson at the 3:21
mark gave the Jaguars a 34-26 lead. Clayton State came back with an
8-0 run behind 3-point baskets by Dominique Jennings and Taneesha
Whitely, but Augusta State took a 36-34 lead at halftime on a lay-up
by Godwin with 58 seconds remaining.
Clayton State took the lead for good in the second half when
Jennings scored on a lay-up with 17:20 remaining. The Lakers then
took their first double-digit lead of the game, 56-45 on a lay-up by
Lesheria Stevens with 11:27 remaining. A 12-0 Clayton State run over
the next five minutes gave the Lakers their largest lead of the
game, 70-52.
The closest Augusta State was able to trim the lead was seven points
with 47 seconds remaining.
Jennings and Woodard each scored 14 points for Clayton State, while
Stevens scored 12 points, Nikkisha Pritchett scored 11 points and
Lisa Jackson added 10 points. For the game, Clayton State
out-rebounded Augusta State 46-42 and forced 31 Jaguar turnovers.
For Augusta State (3-6, 1-1 PBC), Godwin scored a game-high 25
points and recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds. White scored
24 points for the Jaguars, who shot an impressive 51 percent from
the field.
Clayton State plays host to Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia
College on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
