17th-ranked Lakers tie single-game team rebounding record in improving to 7-3 overall

MORROW, Ga. – Dec. 30, 2007 — The Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team made it two-for-two on Sunday in its Heritage Bank Holiday Classic as the Lakers rolled to a 79-64 victory over visiting Fayetteville State at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

The victory is the second straight for 17
th-ranked Clayton State, which is now 7-3 overall.

Clayton State’s strong inside attack was the key, especially the play of the "Jackson" duo – forward Lisa Jackson and center Lynette Jackson. Lisa Jackson scored a career-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field, while Lynette Jackson scored 15 points with seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

The victory was especially sweet for Lynette Jackson, who is from Fayetteville, N.C., the location of Fayetteville State. The 6-foot-4 senior was a prep standout at Douglas Byrd High School in Fayetteville.

There were six ties and five lead changes in the first half before Clayton State took control of the game with a 16-0 run. Shanrika Hardeman started the rally with a lay-up at the 5:20 mark, followed by a big 3-point basket by Lisa Jackson.

Lynette Jackson added two straight inside lay-ups, and a 3-point play by Roberta Phillips gave the Lakers a 34-18 lead with three minutes remaining. Lynette Jackson scored in transition again to give Clayton State a 15-point lead, and the Lakers took a 41-27 lead at halftime.

Fayetteville State became more aggressive on the offensive glass in the second half as the Lady Broncos widdled down the Clayton State. A lay-up by Leticia Dickson cut the Laker lead to 53-46 with 13:03 remaining, but that was as close as Fayetteville State would get.

Clayton State responded with a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes to pretty much seal the game. Lisa Jackson scored three straight lay-ups, including a 3-point play to give Clayton State a 65-48 lead with 8:11 remaining. Dominique Jennings’ 3-point basket at the 5:52 mark then gave the Lakers a 72-50 lead, their largest of the game at 22 points.

In addition to the Jackson duo, Shantel Ragin scored 14 points with nine rebounds and six assists, while Hardeman recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Phillips also added six assists.

As a team, Clayton State limited Fayetteville State to only 28 percent shooting from the field, and the Lakers tied the team single-game record for rebounds with 67.

For Fayetteville State (5-5), Dickson scored 19 points, while L’Oreal Price scored 10 points. The Lady Broncos grabbed 62 rebounds, including 32 offensive rebounds.
