Clayton State women regain form with 62-47 victory over Armstrong Atlantic
Ragin scores 11 points as Lakers improve to 12-6 and 7-4 in Peach Belt Conference

MORROW, GA. – January 30, 2008 – With Saturday’s tough home defeat against Francis Marion behind them, the Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team regained its winning form on Wednesday with a 62-47 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Armstrong Atlantic at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

The victory, the fifth in the last six games for Clayton State, improves the Lakers to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the Peach Belt Conference. Clayton State has now won nine straight games head-to-head against Armstrong Atlantic.

Armstrong Atlantic, behind some stellar perimeter shooting from guard Lindsey Holmes stayed on Clayton State’s heels most of the first half as the Lakers never had more than a four-point lead. A jump shot by Versluis Kelly cut the Clayton State lead to 27-25 at halftime.

However, Clayton State took control, opening the second half on a 22-5 run and extending its lead to 19 points. Marie St. Fort ignited the rally with a 3-point basket, and followed that up with a lay-up off a Pirate turnover.

After Armstrong Atlantic cut the deficit to 10 points, the Lakers answered with a 9-0 run. Roberta Phillips scored in transition off an Armstrong Atlantic turnover, and her 3-point basket off another Pirate turnover gave Clayton State a commanding 49-30 lead with 8:54 remaining.

A jump shot by Shantel Ragin gave the Lakers their largest lead of the game, 51-31 at the 7:15 mark. The closest that Armstrong Atlantic would cut the lead was 10 points 55-45 on a jump shot by Jasmine Herron with 3:38 remaining.

Ragin scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists for Clayton State, while junior center Kim Larry scored 10 points off the bench on 4-for-6 shooting from the field. Phillips scored nine points and St. Fort and Arlanderia Whitlock each added eight points.

For the game, Clayton State limited Armstrong Atlantic to only 31 percent shooting from the field, and 29 percent shooting from 3-point range. The Lakers also forced 26 Pirate turnovers.

For Armstrong Atlantic (10-7, 4-6), Holmes scored 13 points, while Lacey Willis scored 12 points.

Clayton State hits the road this weekend for a key Peach Belt Conference encounter at UNC-Pembroke on Saturday at 2 p.m.
