Lakers advance two spots this week after weekend victories over Shaw, Valdosta State

MORROW, Ga. --- DECEMBER 20, 2006 --- The USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coach’s Poll for women’s basketball was released on Tuesday, and the Clayton State Lakers moved up two spots in this week’s rankings.

After taking one step back to 22nd last week, the Lakers took two steps forward this week and are ranked 20th in the new poll. Clayton State received 139 points for this week’s poll, and the Lakers are the only Peach Belt Conference team in the rankings.

Clayton State is also one of two Georgia teams in the rankings. Fort Valley State is ranked just ahead of the Lakers at 19th.

The Lakers are coming off two big weekend victories. Clayton State routed visiting Shaw on Friday in a key Division II South Atlantic Region showdown 82-67 at the Athletics & Fitness Center. That was followed on Saturday with a hard-fought 78-71 victory at in-state rival Valdosta State.

Clayton State is currently 8-1 overall on the season. The Lakers are off for the Holiday break, but will return to action on Dec. 29-31, playing host to the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
