Clayton State finalizes NCAA Division II South Atlantic Women’s Regional details
Lakers face Carson-Newman in opening round on Friday

MORROW, Ga. – MARCH 7, 2007 Clayton State will play host to its first-ever NCAA women’s basketball postseason even this weekend when the Lakers compete in the NCAA Division II South Regional at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

Clayton, the Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament champions, is making its third straight trip to the “Big Dance.” The Lakers are one of three Peach Belt Conference teams to reach the NCAA Division II National Tournament, joining Columbus State and Georgia College in the Regional.

Clayton State (25-5) will enter the tournament as the Regional’s top seed and will face eighth-seeded Carson-Newman on Friday at 6 p.m. The Eagles advanced to the South Atlantic Tournament championship before falling to Newberry 67-62 in the title game.

The South Atlantic Regional will consist of four sessions and include seven games over a four-day stretch. Wingate (23-6), the No. 3 seed, and sixth-seeded Georgia College (19-9) will tip off regional play at 1 p.m. on Friday. At 3 p.m., No. 2 North Carolina Central (25-5) and No. 7 Newberry (24-6) will meet in the second game of Session One.

Clayton State and Carson Newman (21-9) will square off in the first game of the second session at 6 p.m., before No. 4 Elizabeth City State (21-9) and No. 5 Columbus State (20-10) wrap up the first day of action at 8 p.m.

The Regional semifinals are on Saturday with the winner of Wingate and North Georgia squaring off against the winner of North Carolina Central and Newberry at 6 p.m., followed by the winner of Clayton State and Carson-Newman against the winner of Elizabeth City State and Columbus State at 8 p.m. The semifinal winners then battle for the Regional Championship and the right to advance to the Elite Eight on Mar. 21 in Kearney, Neb.

Tickets will be on sale starting on Friday right before the first game of the Regional. Ticket prices are $3 for students (with student ID) and $8 for adults and these tickets are for each session (Two on Friday, one on Saturday and one on Monday).
