Columbus, GA, --- March 4, 2003
--- The Clayton College & State University women’s basketball team’s
season came to an end Tuesday in the first round Peach Belt Conference
Championships, falling to Francis Marion University 59-47 at the Lumpkin Center
on the campus of Columbus State University.

Clayton State, the fourth seed from the
South, concluded its season at 16-11. The Lakers recorded a school record 10
Peach Belt victories this season and had the second most wins in school history.

never led again as consecutive three-pointers by Michelle Ghere capped a 13-3
run by FMU to put the Lady Patriots on top 38-30 with 12:39 remaining.

Patriots outscored the Lakers 19-9 in the first 11 minutes of the second half to
take control of the game. The second of two free throws by Jontell Johnson with
9:12 remaining gave FMU a 44-33 lead.

Francis
Marion coach Valecia Tedder:
“Neither team shot very well. We didn’t
shoot very well, but we had a lot of second opportunities (16 offensive
rebounds). I think that our defense definitely stepped it up today. We created
25 turnovers. Our offense just didn’t click."
“That was probably more of a lift for us
emotionally than anything. She stayed in foul trouble the whole game. It allowed
us more opportunities inside. We had the same game plan tonight (as last week)
to double-team Shaw. It always helps you when you don’t have to do that.”
Francis
Marion’s Jontell Johnson:
“It was a big change when Shaw left the
game. I like to take it to the basket and without her in there that was a big
impact for us. When (Clayton State)
got frustrated we had to step forward and play off their frustration and take it
to them.”
Francis
Marion’s Michelle Ghere:
On
making 7-of-8 key free throws: “Taking them didn’t bother me at all.
I knew I could step up to the line and make them.”
Clayton
College & State University Coach A.C. McCullers:
“I thought for the most part when (Shaw) got in foul
trouble we had to change things around.”
“Francis Marion played extremely
well. They just beat us. We
didn’t shoot the ball well (14-of-52) and you can’t win many ball games
shooting like that.”
Clayton
State’s Catreia Shaw:
“It’s very disappointing to end my career so early
with this game. I know I’m a better basketball player than this.”
Clayton
State falls to Francis Marion 76-62;
to face Patriots again in the 1st round of Peach Belt Tournament on
Tues.
