Clayton State women's basketball team
signs four players for 2002-03 season

Morrow, GA — May 21, 2002 ---- After posting its highest win total in four years and its most Peach Belt Conference wins ever, the Clayton College & State University women's basketball team took a giant step in the 2001-02 season. With the recent signing of four more talented Lady Laker players this spring, the program hopes to continue its climb up the Peach Belt ladder in 2002-03.

Head coach A.C. McCullers' 2002 class of signees is comprised of one Division I transfer and three incoming freshmen. April Taylor, a freshman last season at Georgia State University, joins three incoming high school freshmen in Carlie Anderson, Hokes Bluff, AL; Rhonda Bass, Cleveland, GA; and Ashley Howell, Gadsden, AL.

In addition, Cynthia Conseil, a sophomore from the French island of Martinque, will be added to the mix of new players after enrolling at Clayton State during the spring. Coach McCullers also says he will probably sign one more player this summer.

"We are extremely excited about the group of young ladies we have coming in," said head coach AC McCullers. "We feel like we have addressed some areas that we needed to improve, and in the process, signed some talented basketball players."

Taylor, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward from Memphis, TN, heads the recruiting class, joining the Lakers after playing last season on Georgia State's 21-10 squad that won the 2001-02 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships.

"April (Taylor) will make an immediate impact on our team," said McCullers. "With Catreia (Shaw) and Apryl (Brown) returning inside, we already had one of the conference's top inside combinations, but with April joining the mix, it will be even stronger."

Last season at Georgia State, Taylor played in 21 games for the Lady Panther squad that made the NCAA tournament before falling to the University of Tennessee in the first round. Her two top games came against Troy State University and Samford University, where she scored eight points in each game. Against Troy State, she went 2-of-2 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free throw line, while pulling four rebounds. Against Samford, she hit 2-of-3 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line, while pulling six rebounds.

On the season, she shot 56 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free throw line, averaging two points and two rebounds per game.

"April played quite a bit on a good Georgia State team," said McCullers. "She is a tremendous athlete with great speed and quickness."

At Memphis' Craigmont High School, Taylor averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds per game, while picking up more than two steals per contest. She was named a "Best of the Preps" player by Memphis' Commerical-Appeal newspaper and the Nike All-Star game's Most Valuable Player.

Anderson, a 5-6 guard, is a graduate of Hokes Bluff High School in Alabama, where she started for four years. She averaged 17 points per game on last year's team that finished with a 19-7 record. Anderson was limited to 17 games last season after breaking her collarbone.

"Carlie (Anderson) is an excellent shooter, especially from 3-point range," said McCullers. "She will provide some much needed depth and give us another guard that can shoot the basketball."

A 5-5 point guard from Gaston High School in Alabama, Howell averaged 19 points, four rebounds and five steals per game. She shot 41 percent from the 3-point territory and 71 percent from the free throw line.

"Ashley (Howell) is a true point guard and a tremendous 3-point shooter," said McCullers. "She had a fantastic season last year, leading her team to the finals of the state championship."

Among her many awards and honors, Howell was named Etowah County's Most Valuable Player, the Northeast Regional Most Valuable Player, second team All-State and to the State All-Tournament team. She also won the 3-point shooting competition at the state tournament.

Bass, a 5-6 guard, helped lead her White County team to the Georgia state tournament in the 2002 season, averaging 14 points per game.

"Rhonda (Bass) also shoots the ball extremely well," said McCullers. "She will provide us some depth at the guard position. She sees the floor and handles the ball really well."

A 5-8, guard/forward from Martinque, Conseil is a versatile player who has a superb shoot and is an excellent passer. She joins the Lady Laker squad after practicing with the team last winter.

"She (Cynthia) sees the floor extremely well and makes good decisions with the basketball," said McCullers. "She is going to be a versatile player for us and contribute in many ways since she can pass and shoot the ball so well."

COLUMBUS, GA. -
Mikel Taylor grabbed a rebound after her teammate missed a jumper with four seconds left and put it up and in to give North Florida a 64-62 win over Clayton State at the buzzer in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Columbus, Ga. North Florida (19-8), who trailed by as many as 13 in the game and 11 at the half, held Clayton State to 24 percent shooting in the second half and will move on to the tournament semifinals where they will face either Francis Marion or Columbus State on Saturday.

Clayton State (13-15) opened the game slowly, trailing the Lady Ospreys by two until a three-point play from Apryl Brown started a 19-4 run that gave CCSU a 13-point lead. A layup from UNF’s Skye Barber cut that lead down to 11 and the Lady Ospreys trailed 42-31 at the break.

The North Florida defense came out in the second half and shut down the Lakers, who had hit over 50 percent it the first half. UNF used a full court press with their zone and man-to-man sets to prevent Clayton State from scoring a single point for the first 8:12 of the second half until a Kate Kauffman layup gave the Lakers a 44-40 lead.

From there it was nip and tuck the rest of the way as neither team led by more than five as the teams were tied six times in the second half alone. Two free throws from Clayton State’s Nicia Puckett provided the sixth tie with 43 seconds to play, and her jumper with 16 seconds left was the seventh. North Florida began the final possession of the game with 11 seconds to play, Barber took the shot that was put back by Taylor.

Barber led all players with 20 points while Taylor finished with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds. UNF held Clayton State to 24 percent (6-25) shooting in the second half. Puckett led all Lakers with 16 points while Catreia Shaw, who dominated at times in the paint, finished with 14 points and a team-best eight boards.

Post game comments

North Florida head coach Mary Tappmeyer:

“Defensively we did a much better job in the second half. We decided we were going to press.”

“They switched defenses on us in the first half and we had trouble recognizing. We decided to press them in the second half after we recognized they took quick shots in the beginning of the second half.”

(On the final play): “I would love to say I drew it up that way, but I didn’t...you let your players do what they do best and for us, we went to our strength which is our post.”

Clayton State head coach A.C. McCullers:

“We tried to get it in to Catreia (Shaw), but she got in foul trouble. It was a game of streaks, a close game all the way. Mainly, we got real hesitant against the press and stopped taking shots.”

“We knew they were going to (Skye Barber) on the final play, the ball came off the rim and we weren’t there. We played not to get beat, not playing to win.”

Puckett and Shaw join Brown as
Lady Laker signees for 2001-02 season

Morrow, GA-- May 22, 2001---Clayton College & State University head women’s basketball coach A.C. McCullers announced the recent signing of two players to National Letters of Intent. Nicia Puckett and Catreia Shaw signed with the Lady Lakers this spring and will join Apryl Brown who signed during the early signing period late last year.

"All three of them will be solid contributors next season," said head coach A.C. McCullers, coming off his second season at CCSU. "Because of injuries last season, we were forced to play a lot of freshman, but next season we should have an experienced group of girls. With three seniors returning, a solid group of sophomores coming back and the addition of these three young ladies, we feel like we can take the next step in the conference."

Brown, a 5-11 post from Collins Hill High School, helped lead her team last season to the 5-A state championship and a 30-3 overall record. She averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game last year. Collins Hill won the Region-8AAAAA championship and closed the season on a 14-game winning streak that included the state title victory.

"We are very excited about what Apryl can bring to our program," said McCullers. "She is a gifted player that can run the floor, shoot, and play good defense."

Said Collins Hill head coach Angie Hembree, "She is a leader both on and off the floor. She is a well-rounded young lady and will make an excellent addition to the Clayton State program."

Catreia Shaw, a 6-foot-3 center from Pearson, GA, joins the Lady Lakers after playing two years at Grayson County College in Denison, TX. Shaw played high school at Atkinson County High School.

"Catreia is a true post player," said McCullers. "She has tremendous hands for her size and is an excellent rebounder both offensively and defensively. She will be an immediate impact and provide us an inside presence that we haven't had in the past."

Shaw was the leading rebounder last season in the North Texas Junior College League and helped lead Grayson to a 23-9 record last season.

Puckett, a 5-8 sophomore guard from Ellenwood, GA, played one season at Valdosta State University in 1999-00 after playing under McCullers at Morrow High School.

"Nicia can play either point guard or on the wing and will give us another talented player on the perimeter," said McCullers. "She has outstanding quickness and sees the floor very well. She has great anticipation and does a lot of things that you just can't teach."

The Lady Lakers graduated only one senior from last year's team and will return three seniors and eight sophomores next year. Clayton State will open the season Nov. 16-17, hosting the Heritage Bank Kick-Off Classic.
