Clayton State track and field headed to Penn Relays and Coach "O" Invitational
Five Laker men to compete in prestigious Philadelphia meet, while remainder head to Troy

MORROW, Ga. – April 24, 2008 – Following a weekend off from competition, the Clayton State Laker track & field teams resume their outdoor schedules this weekend.

The Laker men’s team will have five members competing on Friday and Saturday at the Penn Relays at historic Frankin Field in Philadelphia, while the remaining members, along with the full women’s team, competes Saturday at the Coach O Invitational at Troy.

Led by senior Eric Simmons, the five-man squad competing at the prestigious Penn Relays will mark the second time that Clayton State has sent representation to the meet, the longest continuous running track and field meet in the nation that was first run in 1895. In 2005, Simmons was a key component in the Lakers’ 4x400-meter relay that ran 3:14.08 to win their heat, edging Savannah State and Kansas in the prelims to advance to the collegiate finals.

On Friday, Simmons, along with senior Josh Tiggs, juniors Ahmad Rolle and Lawrence DeShields and freshman Tim Moran will run in preliminary heats of the 4x100-meter relays, the 4x200-meter relays, and the 4x400-meter relays, hoping to make a final in one of the events on Saturday.

Meantime, the rest of the Lakers will be in Troy, Ala. on Saturday for the Coach O Invitational. It will mark the first time in 10 years that a Clayton State squad has run at Troy. The meet will be made up of mostly Division I teams such as Auburn, Florida A&M, Middle Tennessee State, South Alabama and Western Kentucky, to name a few.

The Laker women will have several members at Troy hoping to either improve their NCAA Division II provisional marks or make one as the season’s end fast approaches.

"We heading into the final two weeks of the season for a majority of the teams," said Laker head coach Mike Mead. "Many of our athletes have been making nice progress during outdoor season and these next two weekends will be interesting."
