Another shutout! Clayton
State men blank visiting Montevallo 2-0
Phillips, Ray each score as
Lakers improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in Peach Belt
 MORROW,
Ga. – October 8, 2009 – The shutout streak continues for the
Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team.
The Lakers made it three straight shutouts on Thursday with a key
2-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Montevallo at Laker
Field. Clayton State improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the PBC.
It’s the first time in three seasons that the Lakers have recorded
three straight shutouts, and the first time that a Pete
Petersen-coached Clayton State squad has defeated Montevallo.
Of the Lakers’ seven victories, six have come by way of shutout.
It appeared to be a scoreless first half as neither team could mount
much of an offensive attack. However, the Lakers got a key break
with two minutes remaining when Sukhman Bal found Matty Phillips
streaking down the left flank. The sophomore then hammered home the
first Laker goal from 22 yards out on the left side of the penalty
box.
The scored stayed 1-0 until the 62nd
minute. The Lakers’ Liam Brown found a crease down the right wing
and sent a perfect cross to Jonathan Ray in front of the net for
Clayton State’s second goal.
In earning his PBC-leading sixth shutout, Clayton State goalkeeper
David Cristofoli recorded four saves, while Robert Mueller recorded
two saves for Montevallo (5-5-1, 1-3 PBC). The Lakers out-shot the
Falcons 15-13, and the two teams combined for 24 fouls.
