Defensive standoff ends in scoreless tie for
Clayton State men against Francis Marion

Lakers record fourth straight shutout, first time since 2001 season

MORROW, Ga. – October 11, 2009 – Defense was the name of the game on Sunday as the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team battled to a scoreless overtime tie against visiting Francis Marion in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field.

The tie ended a three-game winning streak for the Lakers (7-4-1, 3-1-1 PBC). However, Clayton State recorded a shutout for the fourth straight game, the first time for the Lakers since the 2001 season. In addition, it’s the third straight season that a Clayton State-Francis Marion game has ended in an overtime tie.

Despite the tie, Clayton State clearly dominated the game offensively. The Lakers out-shot Francis Marion (5-3-3, 1-1-2 PBC) 23-7. However, Francis Marion received strong play in the net by its goalkeeper, Clark Richeson, who recorded 12 saves for the Patriots.

Clayton State had three gold opportunities in the second half.

In the 70
th minute, Clayton State forward Matthias Faublas dribbled the ball through the left wing of the penalty box, and appeared to score the first goal for the Lakers. However, the ball went over the end line before Faublas took the shot.

About eight minutes later, the Lakers got what appeared to be another goal as Richeson mis-handled a corner kick and the ball went into the net. But Clayton State was whistled for a foul on the play. Finally, in the waning seconds, Faublas sent a perfect left cross to a waiting Alargie Jobe for a sure header. But Richeson was alert and corralled the save with 10 seconds remaining.

Laker goalkeeper David Cristofoli recorded four saves for his conference-leading seventh shutout on the season.
