advances USC Aiken past Clayton State men in Peach Belt Conference

Ga. – November 4, 2008 – Overtime has been the name of the
game this season for the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer, and that
was the case again in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference
Tournament on Tuesday.
Playing host to rival USC Aiken, Clayton State went into overtime
for a ninth time this season, and battled the visiting Pacers to a
2-2 tie. However, USC Aiken won 4-2 in penalty kicks and will
advance to the upcoming Peach Belt Conference semifinals. It is the
second time in the last three seasons that USC Aiken has eliminated
Clayton State in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
Clayton State’s season concludes at 9-5-4.
The Lakers had to overcome an early deficit as USC Aiken (5-10-1)
took a 1-0 lead in the 24th
minute on a goal from the right side of the penalty box by Troy
Watson. However, the Lakers got the equalizer in the 42nd
minute as Leighton Fredericks scored in traffic in front of the goal
off an assist by Patrick Ahern.
Early in the second half, the Lakers took a 2-1 lead on a goal by
Angel Kalinov in the 46th
minute. But USC Aiken answered in the 50th
minute, this time on a goal in traffic by John Lesko.
Clayton State goalkeeper David Cristofoli recorded three saves,
while USC Aiken goalkeeper Milad Zareian recorded six saves. The
game featured seven yellow cards and a combined 29 fouls.
