Clayton State men, North
Georgia battle to 1-1 tie
Fredericks scores lone goal as
Lakers are now 7-3-2 and 2-0-2 in Peach Belt Conference
 DAHLONEGA,
Ga. - October 11, 2008 – Overtime games are becoming common
for the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team this season, and it
was no different on Saturday.
Playing at Peach Belt Conference rival North Georgia, the Lakers
played their seventh overtime game of the season, and the result was
a 1-1 deadlock against North Georgia at the North Georgia Soccer
Complex. Clayton State, now 7-0-2 in its last nine games, is now
7-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the Peach Belt Conference.
After a scoreless first half, North Georgia (5-8-1, 0-2-1 PBC) drew
first blood in the 48 th
minute. The Saints’ Bradley Rose took an incoming pass from
Santiago Pinzon between Laker defender Matthias Faublas and
goalkeeper David Cristofoli and scored to give North Georgia a 1-0
lead.
However, Clayton State scored the equalizer 10 minutes later as
freshman Leighton Fredericks headed home the goal off a cross from
Matty Phillips. It was Fredericks’ eighth goal of the season, and
the seventh assist on the season for Phillips.
Neither team could muster much down the stretch, although North
Georgia appeared to take the lead the waning moments of regulation.
However, an offsides call wiped out the potential game-winning goal
for North Georgia.
Cristofoli recorded three saves for Clayton State, while North
Georgia goalkeeper Rade Tanaskovic recorded five saves. Clayton
State out-shot North Georgia 21-9.
