Madegwa’s hat-trick propels Clayton State to 6-0 shutout over UNC-Pembroke
Geathers also scores twice as 23rd-ranked Lakers improve to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1 in Peach Belt

MORROW, Ga. – September 29, 2007 – With a week to heal its wounds from a disappointing defeat last weekend at USC-Aiken, the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer took nothing to chance on Saturday and rolled past visiting UNC-Pembroke 6-0 at Laker Field in Peach Belt Conference action.

The victory improves 23rd-ranked Clayton State to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. All six of Clayton State’s victories this season have come by way of shutouts, and Clayton State has now won four straight against UNC-Pembroke – all by shutout.

Offensively, senior forward Tonny Madegwa came alive with a hat-trick for the Lakers. He scored both Clayton State goals of the first half in the span of two minutes.

Madegwa’s first came in the 21st minute inside the penalty box off an incoming pass from Brett Neilsen. Two minutes later, Madegwa took a pass from Dean Gilewicz on the left side of the penalty box and hammered home a 15-yard strike to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

Matthias Faublas gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute when he scored from 16 yards out on the left side of the box off an assist by Jarrid Nicholson. Madegwa then scored his third goal of the night in the 68th minute with a penalty kick.

Not to be out-done, Clayton State’s leading scorer Jamal Geathers got in on the act. The freshman forward scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season late in the span of two minutes. Geathers’ first was a header in the 84th minute off a cross from Johnny Lara, followed by a goal in the center of the penalty box off a pass from Marijan Babic.

Clayton State goalkeeper Janiel Simon recorded the shutout with four saves, while Wes Bowers recorded four saves for UNC-Pembroke (1-8, 0-1).

Clayton State plays host to neighboring Division III power Emory on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Laker Field.
