Laker men drop 4-1 decision at Montevallo in Division II Top 25
showdown
English scores
lone goal as Clayton State falls to 8-3-1 overall
MONTEVALLO,
Ala. – October 9, 2007 –
What was expected to be a showdown of two Division II Top 25 teams
turned out to be a nightmare for the 20th-ranked Clayton
State Laker men’s soccer team as it dropped a 4-1 decision at 25th-ranked
Montevallo on Tuesday night.
The defeat ended a three-game winning streak for Clayton State as
the Lakers fall to 8-3-1 overall.
Clayton State was behind the 8-ball early as the Falcons struck for
two first half goals – both by Glenn Murphy. The senior forward
scored the first Montevallo goal in the seventh minute off a direct
kick from the left side of the penalty box. Nine minutes later,
Murphy was tackled inside the penalty box, and his penalty kick
score gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons extended their lead with two goals in the second half.
Milan Pualic scored in the 54th minute off a double
assist by Murphy and Otavio Tramontina. 15 minutes later, James Ward
scored off a cross pass from Tramontina.
Clayton State’s lone goal was in the 76th minute when
senior Danny English headed home a score off a corner kick by Jarrid
Nicholson.
Laker goalkeepers Janiel Simon and Billy Hale combined for two
saves, while Melford James recorded three saves for Montevallo
(12-1-1). The game was physical with five cards issued, including a
red card on Laker midfielder Hailab Habtom, forcing him to sit out
the Lakers’ next game.
Clayton State returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday at
3:30 p.m. at Georgia Southwestern.
