Laker men drop 4-1 decision at Montevallo in Division II Top 25 showdown
English scores lone goal as Clayton State falls to 8-3-1 overall

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – October 9, 2007 – What was expected to be a showdown of two Division II Top 25 teams turned out to be a nightmare for the 20th-ranked Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team as it dropped a 4-1 decision at 25th-ranked Montevallo on Tuesday night.

The defeat ended a three-game winning streak for Clayton State as the Lakers fall to 8-3-1 overall.

Clayton State was behind the 8-ball early as the Falcons struck for two first half goals – both by Glenn Murphy. The senior forward scored the first Montevallo goal in the seventh minute off a direct kick from the left side of the penalty box. Nine minutes later, Murphy was tackled inside the penalty box, and his penalty kick score gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons extended their lead with two goals in the second half. Milan Pualic scored in the 54th minute off a double assist by Murphy and Otavio Tramontina. 15 minutes later, James Ward scored off a cross pass from Tramontina.

Clayton State’s lone goal was in the 76th minute when senior Danny English headed home a score off a corner kick by Jarrid Nicholson.

Laker goalkeepers Janiel Simon and Billy Hale combined for two saves, while Melford James recorded three saves for Montevallo (12-1-1). The game was physical with five cards issued, including a red card on Laker midfielder Hailab Habtom, forcing him to sit out the Lakers’ next game.

Clayton State returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Georgia Southwestern.
