5-1 rout at Peach Belt rival Georgia Southwestern

Clayton State improves to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1 in PBC
AMERICUS,
Ga. – October 13, 2007 – Fresh off a humiliating defeat on
Tuesday at
Montevallo,
the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer needed to rebound successfully
in returning to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday at Georgia
Southwestern.
It did as four different players scored for Clayton State as the
Lakers rolled to a 5-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern at
Hurricane Field. The victory improves Clayton State to 9-3-1 overall
and 3-1 in the Peach Belt. However, it is the first victory this
season that the Lakers have allowed a goal.
Clayton State appeared to be on its way to a ninth shutout of the
season when Georgia Southwestern spoiled it in the final minute. The
Hurricanes’ Sam Hooke scored in front of the Laker goal off a cross
by Kacey Bernard with 47 seconds remaining in the game.
Meanwhile, Clayton State took control in the first half with four
goals.
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the 14 th
minute on a goal by senior midfielder Dean Gilewicz off a
double-assist by Jarrid Nicholson and Tonny Madegwa. It was
Gilewicz’s first goal in his two seasons in a Laker uniform. Four
minutes later, freshman forward Jamal Geathers scored his 13th
goal on the season off an assist by Alex Sethi off a corner kick.
Clayton State increased the lead to 3-0 in the 32nd
minute when Madegwa got away down the right side. Georgia
Southwestern goalkeeper John Scharnikow saved his initial shot, but
Madegwa scored off the ricochet.
The Lakers’ fourth goal of the half came on an own-goal in the 39th
minute.
The lone goal for Clayton State in the second came in the 81st
minute as senior B.J. Livingston scored from the right side of the
box off a cross from Angel Kalinov.
The Clayton State goalkeeping combination of Janiel Simon and Billy
Hale combined for one save, while Scharnikow and Alex Crandall
combined for seven saves for Georgia Southwestern (0-14, 0-4).
Clayton State dominated offensively, out-shooting Georgia
Southwestern 28-4.
Clayton State returns home on Tuesday, playing host to North
Greenville at 6 p.m. at Laker Field.
