14th-ranked Clayton
State men fend off stubborn Erskine 2-0
Geathers, Habtom both score as
Lakers improve to 5-1-1 overall
DUE
WEST, S.C. – September 19, 2007 – The Clayton State Laker
men’s soccer
team
got more than it bargained for on Wednesday night at Erskine.
However, two late second half goals were enough as the Lakers downed
the stubborn Fleet 2-0.
The victory was the second straight for 14th-ranked
Clayton State, which improves to 5-1-1 overall. All five Laker
victories so far this season have been shutouts.
Erskine didn’t look like a team that had only two victories on the
season entering the contest. The Fleet held Clayton State at bay for
the entire first half and much of the second half before the Lakers
finally broke through offensively.
Freshman forward Jamal Geathers scored Clayton State’s first goal in
the 76th
minute when he scored off the rebound of Erskine goalkeeper Jimmy
Turner. Hailab Habtom recorded the assist. Seven minutes later,
Habtom gave the Lakers a needed insurance goal, scoring on a penalty
kick.
As it has most of the season, the Clayton State defense was
stifling. The Lakers limited Erskine to only seven shots for the
game, including only three on goal. Clayton State goalkeepers Janiel
Simon and Billy Hale combined for the shutout with three saves.
Turner recorded six saves for Erskine (2-6-1).
Clayton State opens Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday with a
7 p.m. contest at USC-Aiken.
