Clayton State gets back
on track with 3-0 shutout over Brevard
Geathers, Lara, Habtom each
score goals as 15th-ranked
Lakers improve to 3-0-1
BREVARD,
N.C. – September 7, 2007 – After Thursday’s emotionally
draining tie at
Lees-McRae, the last thing the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team
needed was a letdown on Friday at Brevard.
None to worry.
With the combination of precision ball movement on offense and
another stellar defensive performance, the Lakers got back on track
with a convincing 3-0 shutout victory over Brevard. The victory
improves 15 th-ranked
Clayton State to 3-0-1 for the season.
Total domination was it for the Lakers. Clayton State out-shot the
Tornados 24-5, and never gave Brevard any true scoring
opportunities. Meanwhile, the Lakers constantly stayed on the
offensive attack, keeping Brevard off-balanced.
Jamal Geathers gave Clayton State a 1-0 lead in the 23rd
minute with a 21-yard shot from the right side of the penalty box
off a pass from Tonny Madegwa. The score stayed 1-0 at halftime
before the Lakers broke it open in the second half.
Johnny Lara scored his second goal of the season with an unassisted
shot from 10 yards to right of the goal in the 59th
minute. Six minutes later, Hailab Habtom finished the Clayton State
scoring with a goal from the left side the penalty box off an assist
by Angel Kalinov.
Laker goalkeepers Billy Hale and Janiel Simon combined for Clayton
State’s third shutout in four games this season. Trevor Redpath
recorded seven saves for Brevard (2-3).
Clayton State returns to the friendly confines of Laker Field on
Wednesday, playing host to Savannah College of Art & Design at 7
p.m.
